West Penn Twp. approves new employee heath insurance

It looks like the employees of West Penn Township will be getting new health insurance come Sept. 1.

With a unanimous vote Tuesday, West Penn's supervisors decided to drop their current health insurance plan and switch to health care provided by Central PA Teamsters. This switch was made because of the savings the township would accrue in addition to the richer benefits that the employees would benefit from.A representative from Teamsters, Joann Vogel, was present at the meeting to discuss these increases. Vogel noted that while saving the district approximately $9,400 a year, the employees would find that there were no deductibles on hospitalization, diagnostic work, or surgical work.Additionally, there would be a $15 co-pay, as opposed to the $20 co-pay that they are currently paying through their existing policy. While the Teamsters insurance plan would use a different network - Health America vs. High Mark - almost all of the doctors that the employees at the meeting go to are in the new network. The networks, as Vogel pointed, are virtually the same as in their existing policy.Questions asked by concerned employees ranged from prescription plans, pregnant dependents and their coverage, and pre-existing conditions plans. All of these questions were answered satisfactorily by Vogel and the employees seemed to accept this new plan. While the township voted to take on the new Teamsters health insurance policy, they decided to stay with their current dental, vision, and life insurance policies through other companies.Pine Hill Road StudyIn other board news, the supervisors voted to conduct a study through their engineering company, Rettew, Inc., to decide if the speed limit on Pine Hill Road should be reduced from 55 mph to 45 mphThe total cost of the study would be approximately $1,400, with $1,160 needed if the signs would be changed.
