After standoff, Lehigh man shoots self

After a standoff of several hours, a Lehigh County man shot himself in the head and is listed in critical condition.

State police at Fogelsville said the incident began about 9:05 a.m. on Wednesday when troopers responded to 4356 S. Fifth St., in Upper Milford Township, for a report of a despondent male threatening suicide.On scene troopers, and members of the Emmaus police, observed Francis A. Hartman, 72, of that address, entering a barn on his property with a handgun.Police developed and maintained a safe perimeter and then notified the state police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT).SERT arrived on scene and a crisis negotiator initiated communication with Hartman in an attempt to resolve the incident.Troopers said about 12:42 p.m. Hartman shot himself in the head. He was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, in Salisbury Township, where he is listed in critical condition.The incident is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Fogelsville barracks.
