Driver facing DUI after Monroe crash

A Cambria County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence and related counts following a one-vehicle crash that occurred at 12:49 a.m. Aug. 26 along Burger Hollow Road in Polk Township, Monroe County.

State police at Lehighton said Johnathan E. Leap, 26, of Johnstown, was driving a 2001 Hyundai Accent northbound and failed to negotiate a left curve as he was traveling too fast for conditions. The Accent left the road and struck a utility pole head-on. The pole was sheared in half and was resting in the center of the road when police arrived. The Accent came to rest in the woods, off of the right shoulder.Leap and his passenger, Charles L. Siegfried, 49, of Lehighton, were injured and taken by West End ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono, East Stroudsburg. Both were wearing seat belts, troopers said.Troopers said Leap was under the influence of alcohol and was charged with DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI and accidents involving death/injury while not properly licensed. He was arraigned on the charges and committed to the county prison in Snydersville in lieu of bail. The Accent sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed.
