A fugitive from justice was found during a vehicle stop that also led to the driver being charged with drug violations.
Pocono Mountain Regional police stopped a vehicle along SR940 at Long Pond Road, in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County, about 2:16 p.m. on Sunday, July 4. The driver was identified as a 17-year-old male juvenile from Long Pond. His passenger was identified as Keston Smith, 31, also of Long Pond.
During the course of the stop it was learned that Smith was wanted by New York City police for felony weapons charges. A K9 search of the vehicle was made and found was a large bag of marijuana.
Smith was placed under arrest on the warrant and placed in the county prison in Snydersville pending extradition back to New York. The juvenile was charge with possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He will be charged through the county juvenile probation office.
In an unrelated incident a traffic stop was conducted on Monday, July 5, about 7:57 p.m. in the Mt. Pocono Plaza for motor vehicle code violations. The driver was identified as Stephen Hawkins, 27, of Pocono Summit. In speaking with Hawkins officers noticed something was in his mouth. A further investigation revealed that Hawkins was attempting to consume marijuana before police could find it. He was placed under arrest for tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana.
