Palmerton's 2012 Centennial plans discussed

Palmerton plans to commemorate its centennial in style.

But, exactly how remains to be seen as Chamber of Commerce members on Tuesday discussed plans to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the borough. With the celebration a mere two years away, members took the opportunity to develop strategies to market the community and event. The borough was officially incorporated on Oct. 14, 1912.Peter Kern, chamber president, remarked that 1998 was the centennial of the founding of the borough. At that time, he said a committee was created that oversaw such events as an ethnic buffet and parade.Chamber member Richard Nothstein said he believes a veteran's memorial could be constructed in honor of the ceremony."Or, maybe we could have an old-fashioned ball, some kind of celebration," Nothstein said. "The people in Palmerton are very creative and dedicated."Kern said he believes the centennial will garner widespread interest."It's about getting it planned, laid out," Kern said. "But, we're going to need some kind of steering committee."Chamber member Terry Costenbader said there's the potential for the Rolling Car Cruise to be revived this year.On the topic of suggestions, chamber member David Nothstein recommended a Christmas ball be held."We could use the money toward nonprofit organizations throughout town," David Nothstein said. "Sell them so many per shop."Regardless of how it celebrates the milestone, Kern said it's imperative that an appropriate momento be created.Other potential suggestions from chamber members came in the form of a coloring contest, an essay contest, chorus musicians, and a theme to tie into homecoming.Kern then thanked chamber members for their ideas, and urged them to give the matter more thought."This is not the end of the discussion; it's really the beginning," Kern said. "Planning for this can't start too soon."On a final note, Kern announced that a volunteer is needed to serve on the Palmerton Area Council of the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce.
