Schuylkill County's resident piano quartet, the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble (GCE) will present the second concert of its 2010-2011 season on Sun., Nov. 14, with a program entitled "GCE Goes International!"

The concert will be given at the Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 252 Dock St., Schuylkill Haven, at 3 p.m.The ensemble will perform works by Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), Joaquin Turina (1882-1949), Johannes Brahms (1833- 1897), and contemporary composer and musician David Rimelis.GCE will open Sunday's performance with Clarke's Sonata for Violin and Piano, which the English classical composer and violist wrote in 1919. Best known for her chamber music featuring the viola, she is considered by many to be one of the most important British composers of the period between World War I and World II. She has been widely acclaimed for her compositional skill. GCE members Agnes Maurer, viola, and Anita Gordon, piano, will play the first movement.American composer David Rimelis's music has been performed by orchestras internationally, including the Boston Pops, Royal Liverpool Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Western Australia Symphony, and the National Symphony. A guitarist and violinist, he has toured the United States, South America, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Middle East. GCE will present his Celtic Dances for Violin and Cello.The ensemble will reprise an all-time audience favorite: Joaquin Turina's Piano Quartet. Turina's works are highly flavored by the folk music of Andalusia, his native region of Spain. He worked as a composer, teacher, and critic. In 1931, he was appointed professor of composition at Spain's Madrid Royal Conservatory.Sunday's concert will conclude with Johannes Brahms's C Minor Piano Quartet, written while he was torn between his friendship with the dying Robert Schumann (1810-1856), the gifted German composer and influential music critic, and his hopeless love for Schumann's wife, Clara (1819-1896), also a musician and composer."The theme for this concert, GCE Goes International, is because we are performing works by composers from four different countries," said Maurer, who also serves as the ensemble's executive director.Tickets will be available at the door. Students and children will be admitted free.The audience is invited to a complimentary post-concert reception in the church lobby to meet the artists and fellow music lovers.The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to presenting quality performances of chamber music to audiences in Schuylkill County and beyond.
