Raiders power past Panthers

The pins came fast and furious for Tamaqua in its non-league opener with Panther Valley.

The Blue Raiders racked up six falls, including four under one minute, to power past the visiting Panthers 53-18 Thursday night.Tamaqua (1-0), which opened with a fourth place finish at the Darren Klingerman Memorial Tournament at Bloomsburg, captured 10 of the 13 contested bouts. The Raiders also cashed in for bonus points in eight of their 10 victories."All in all, it's a good start," said Tamaqua Coach Jim McCabe. "We had a good showing at Bloomsburg, placing eight kids, with four in the finals and two champs (seniors Kolby Mashack and Garth Lakitsky)."We were aggressive tonight. We are definitely minimizing our mistakes."The Panthers (2-6) didn't quite have their line-up where they'd like, as they were missing Mike Weaver (160) and John Horvath (215). The Raiders had the distinct edge in the upper weights and kept the momentum rolling their way."Tamaqua wrestled tough and took it to us," said Panther Coach Tim Robb. "I thought it could have been closer, but we got caught in a couple of things."My guys will be dropping down a weight class for the Penn Manor tournament, so when we get everyone down, we'll be okay."The match started at 140, and the Raiders reeled off wins in eight of the first nine bouts to build a commanding 41-3 advantage. The Bucknell-bound Kolby Mashack (4-0) kicked things off by tilting Dustin Marblestone to his back three times before getting the mat slap at 1:25. Philip Christman (2-2) made it 12-0 by using a half-nelson to stop Jared Eickhoff (2-4) at 3:07 at 145.At 152, Evan Mashack (5-2) made a first period takedown and a third period reversal stand up for a 4-0 decision over Josh Vega (2-4). Senior Travis Veronsky (5-2) took down Gage Rohlfing three times in piling up a 10-2 major at 160.Steve Snyder (4-2) got the Panthers on the board at 171, scoring a pair of third period nearfalls to score a 9-2 win over Robert Craigle, but Matt Edmonds (3-1) got the Raiders back on track, pulling away for a 16-3 major over Alex Lorkowski (3-3) at 189.From there, it took the Raiders just 1:20 to put the match on ice.Lakitsky (4-0), who placed fourth in the state in AA last season, was chief among the speed demons, showing Paul David the lights in just 11 seconds. Brandon Vigo (1-2) then took out Nick German in 28 seconds at heavyweight. At 103, freshman Colin Mashack (3-1) packed fellow frosh Len Ogozalek (5-1) in 41 seconds. Brandan Silkowski (4-2) dispatched Elijah Hibbler with a headlock in 31 seconds for the final Raider fall. The Panthers got their own pair of pins from senior Nick O'Donnell (6-0), who used a half-nelson to take our Derek Hill at 112, and senior Brandon Gurka (3-3), who flattened Alex Vincent with a headlock in 23 seconds at 130.Senior Kory Lopata remained unbeaten at 6-0 by outdueling Kyle Boyer 5-0 at 125.Tamaqua 53, Panther Valley 18103 - Colin Mashack (T) pin Len Ogozalek, :41.112 - Nick O'Donnell (PV) pin Derek Hill, 5:03.119 - Derek Drum (T) won by forfeit.125 - Kory Lopata (PV) dec.
