Bombers' youngsters shine

When trying to choose a key match from last night's 36-32 Colonial League win over Catasauqua, Palmerton head coach Dave Lavin had a tough time naming just one.

He quickly opted for the 135-pound bout, pitting Bomber sophomore Joseph Bubble's 1-0 decision over Michael Calderon."(Catty) bumped up one guy and were definitely counting on a win there," Lavin admitted. "I thought Joey really stepped it up and that definitely ruined their game plan."That bout seemed to propel the locals into the lead at the right time. However, the team match eventually came down to the 112-pound bout between freshman Josh Evans and Jacob Rusnock of the Roughies. Evans dispatched of Rusnock with relative ease in a 15-0 technical fall and the local fans had reason to applaud."I knew I could take him because I had wrestled him twice before and beat him both times," Evans reminisced. "I knew what I had to do and went out and did it."I didn't know how good he had gotten, though, so I didn't want to wrestle too cocky or confident."Looking back at Bubble's big win, he remembered, "I think my match was big because it could have gone either way. It definitely helps us though and boosts our team. Hopefully, it gets some more fans out to see us, too."Other Bomber wrestlers to earn huge wins on the night by virtue of pin were sophomores Skyler Rosenberry (215), Andrew Strauss (171), and Jake Christman at 160."Tonight, I really think that our guys understood the concept of bonus points," Lavin mentioned. "They now realize that that's what's going to win us matches down the stretch."Another Palmerton winner that came up huge on the night was Dillon Massington at 125, who collected a 9-8 decision by staying off his back in the waning seconds.Junior Sam Oberlander at 130 pounds scored a 15-5 major, and Kane Kralik added a 4-1 decision at 285.Reflecting on the win, Lavin admitted how nice it is."We knew that we could do it tonight, but we also knew it was going to be hard to bounce back after the forfeits," Lavin said. "A couple mistakes here or there and we could have lost, but our guys did what we coached them to do and it feels great."Palmerton 36, Catasauqua 32103 - Ty Kern (C) won by forfeit112 - Josh Evans (P) tech. fall Jacob Rusnock in 5:14, 15-0119 - Jonathan Huhn (C) won by forfeit125 - Dillon Massington dec.
