Rush road reopened after nine hours

A Rush Township road was reopened on Monday after a tractor trailer crash closed it. Township police said SR54 was reopened to traffic nine hours after the rig crashed.

Police identified the driver of the rig as Kevin Smith, 20, of Danboro, Bucks County.Police said Smith was operating a rig loaded with coal by product eastbound about 7:10 a.m. when the passenger side tires went over the white line and onto the berm causing the load to shift and him to lose control. The truck continued east off the road and struck a wooded utility pole, shearing it off. It then rolled onto its side blocking both lanes of travel.Smith was not injured.Police called state Department of Environmental Protection representatives to the scene to supervise the removal of the dirt from the road and fuel that had spilled from the truck.Fire police from Quakake, Hometown and Tamaqua assisted with traffic control, police added.It was the second crash in the same area involving a truck. Last Wednesday a truck crashed near the old Seitz Pest Control building along SR54.Photos of the crash scene appeared in Monday's TIMES NEWS on page 2.
