Lansford man celebrates 90 years

Alex Shereba, Lansford, celebrated his 90th birthday recently. The son of the late Alex and Xenia Shereba, he was born Aug. 8, 1920 in Lansford.

He is the youngest of eight brothers and sisters: John, Mike, Walter, Ann, Betty, Pauline and Mary.Alex graduated from Lansford High School in 1938. He is a member of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church in Lansford.He is the husband of the late Mary (King) Shereba, and the father of a daughter, Susan, wife of Joe Seaver of Lansford; and a son, Alex Jr., who resides in Coaldale with his wife Mary. He has two grandchildren, Maureen, wife of Tom Osinchak, Nesquehoning, and Matthew Shereba, husband of Katie Penrose, Nazareth.During the late 1930s, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Wellsboro, Pa. He is a merchant marine veteran of World War II.He worked in the local mines, and was employed by the former Olin Aluminum Plant in Nesquehoning (now Kovatch Corp) and more recently, the Stanley Vidmar Plant in Allentown, until his retirement.Until a few years ago he was an active participant in the Carbon County Senor Games, where he won many medals.His hobbies have included dancing and maintaining the 1957 Chevy he restored, and for which he has won many trophies at car shows.

Alex Shereba
