Writers' group
The Black Diamond Writers' Network will meet Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. until noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library, 30 S. Railroad St. Guest speaker will be Tamaqua Police Cpl. Henry Woods, the department's criminal investigator.
Cpl. Woods will share his 19 years experience, as well as present several actual cases and the techniques used to solve them.
The public is welcome to attend.
The BDWN is a nonprofit organization offering writing education and networking opportunities.
The group meets the third Saturday of every month.

First Methodist
Members of First United and Salem United Methodist Churches will be special guests this Sunday at Meed's Memorial Church. The Methodist picnic will be held at Mauch Chunk Lake Park, with a worship service scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Quilters continue to meet every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
The Second Annual Summer Film Festival at First UM continues this Sunday with a presentation of "The Ultimate Gift." "Because of Winn Dixie" will be presented on Sept. 12. Showtimes will be at 7 p.m.
