Tamaqua, Jim Thorpe split

Allison Updike is raising the bar quite high for herself.

In just her third competition of the season, the Tamaqua junior established a new school, stadium and all-time TIMES NEWS area record in the javelin.Updike uncorked a heave of 147 feet Monday afternoon and also won the shot put as the Lady Raiders knocked off visiting Jim Thorpe 90-59 in the Schuylkill League Division I opener for both squads on sunny Stadium Hill.On the boys side, the Olympians gained a split with an 88-61 victory.Updike, a two-time State medalist in the javelin, spent the beginning of last season healing from an anterior cruciate ligament injury to her knee. Now at full-strength, she keyed a 48-14 Raider edge in the field events that offset Thorpe's strong showing in the sprints, hurdles and jumps."Allie just keeps working and working. She's throwing everything well," said Tamaqua coach Tom Kanger. "The school record in the javelin was awesome, and she's just getting started."The old Tamaqua school mark for the girls javelin was 144-4, set by Casey Wagner, now at the University of South Florida. Wagner also held the TN area standard of 146-5, set at the Penn Relays in 2008. Updike is slated to participate at this year's Penn Relays. The Raiders' depth in the jav is apparent, as freshman Christine Streisel placed second to Updike with a throw of 122-5. The Girls AA State standard is 121 feet. The victory gave the Lady Raiders (2-0) a measure of satisfaction after the Olympians ended their 58-meet winning streak, which dated back to 2001, with an 81-60 setback at Thorpe last year."Our girls knew that was out there, and they (Thorpe) are a good team, not weak in any area," said Kanger. "With one loss (in this division), you're out of it, team-wise."Kayla Hope added wins in the 200 meters and long jump for the Raiders, who also got firsts from Cecily Kohlmeir (1,600), Amber Carroll (3,200), Stacey Wallace (shot put), Melody Kelly (pole vault) and the 4x800 team of Dana Ansbach, Kaylee Rottet, Kelsey Patrick and Carroll.JaAshia Page (100, triple jump), Hilary Reis (400, high jump) and Samantha Harlan (100 and 300 hurdles) each won two individual events for Thorpe (1-1), with Harlan running on two winning relays and Page and Reis one each. Kayla Susko added a first place in the 800."It's a numbers game out there," said Jim Thorpe coach Frank Miller. "We knew this would be tight, but they were a little better."We don't have a junior high program, so many of their freshmen and sophomores have more experience than our juniors and seniors. With that and our lack of pole vaulters, it puts us behind the eight-ball. We have to max our kids out."In the boys meet, the Olympians (2-0) captured 12 of 18 events, led by PJ Johnson, a triple winner in the 100, long and high jumps. Johnson edged teammate Carl St. Hill by one-hundredth of a second to win the 100 dash and leaped 20-8 1/2 to win the long jump.Dave Barrientos was a double winner in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, and Thorpe also got wins from Kareem Mickens (400), Pat Beers (discus), Ben Moore (javelin) and Alex Garcia (triple jump)."Our boys had some nice performances," said Miller. "We had some guys back from injuries in the distance events with Dave Barrientos, Matt Curran and Jay Marsden. We were able to compete fully."Eric Hertzog was a double winner for the Raiders (1-1), placing first in both hurdle races.Tamaqua also received firsts from Lance Williams (800), William Breiner (shot put), John Scheitrum (pole vault) and the 4x100 foursome of Joshua Guscott, Jarrod Muffley, Zach Lakitsky and Scheitrum."Jim Thorpe has real good sprinters and jumpers and they had their distance runners back," said Kanger. "We have a lot of young guys, but I felt we hung in there with them."BOYSJim Thorpe 88, Tamaqua 61100 - 1. PJ Johnson (JT) 11.3, 2. Carl St. Hill (JT), 3. Zach Lakitsky (T).200 - 1.
