The competition gets hot and heavy as they attempt to fling a flying disc into a basket.
Those who participate in the fifth annual Victory Park Open in Slatington wouldn't want it any other way.
The tournament will be held at Victory Park, located at Main and Grove Streets, at 1 p.m. on May 1.
Sponsored by the Slatington Parks and Recreation Commission, the tournament features several age categories: ages 17-and-under, 18-39, and 40-and-over, along with a pro category.
Trophies and prizes will be given out to the top three scores in the amateur divisions, with prize money given out in the pro division. Lunch will be provided to all the golfers.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit recreation projects in the Borough of Slatington.
Robert Stettner, chairman of the commission, said he believes the event is popular because the course at the park is one of only a handful of disc golf courses in the Lehigh Valley.
"First of all, disc golf is a growing sport, and is popular with the 20 and 30 something crowd," Stettner said. "Secondly, there are several courses is the Lehigh Valley, but not a lot, and lastly, we are one of the few area courses that I know of which offer a yearly tournament."
Stettner said the event is important for the commission and the borough.
"One, it brings people to the town," he said. "And, two, it brings people and notoriety to Victory Park, as one of the goals of the recreation commission is to upgrade the park by adding and improving recreational activities and get more people, especially residents, to use it, and make it a place they will consider visiting when they want to recreate."
The course was designed by disc golf pro Dr. John Duesler of Disc Golf Services in Huntingdon Valley, Montgomery County.
