Teachers aren't greedy

Dear Editor:

I would like to address the great number of residents of the Lehighton School District who are so quick to say our teachers are greedy for wanting a raise. How many of you know your facts?Did you know our superintendent, whom does not reside in our district, got a nice 13 percent raise and has a $200 a month gas allowance? Did you know administration also got a raise of 13 percent? Do you know administration paid $17,000 to buy new furniture last year while my child sits on a torn library chair? Our superintendent needed a flat screen TV for his office, us taxpayers bought him that. Did anyone inform the public that our taxes were raised last year in order to pass a budget that already included a 4 percent raise for our teachers? The teachers are willing to accept even less to get a contract signed!I agree that times are tough right now and people should feel lucky to have a job let alone a raise, however, the money is already there and why does the superintendent and administration deserve a raise but not the teachers who are the ones in the classroom teaching our children? Before people call our teachers greedy they should do their homework and see where Lehighton teachers stand in comparison to other districts and I think you'll agree they are NOT greedy!Melissa BarndtLehighton
