One big week pays some big dividends

Last week, I was talking about how it felt to be in last place for the second week in a row.

I did find one bright side. The week before I was in the basement all alone. Last week, I got to share it with Bob Ford and T.J. Engle. Not that I didn't enjoy their company, but with the best record (11-4) in Week No. 4, I've moved in to a tie for third place with former co-leader Mike Haines (who was 7-8 last week), Emmett McCall and Joe Plasko with a 40-20 record.Even Engle moved out of the cellar with a 9-6 record, but Ford (8-7) winds up sharing it with Jason Boris, who also tanked out picking just seven winners out of 15.So now, with leader Shawn McFarland (43-17) just three games ahead of me, we'll try to at least duplicate last week's effort and try and move closer to the top.So let's get started:JIM THORPE AT SHENANDOAH VALLEY - Olympians have yet to win on the road this season and have suffered two big losses in a row. A trip to Shenandoah could provide that first win, but the Devils are 2-2 and seem to be improving ... Shenandoah Valley, 21-20.NORTH SCHUYLKILL AT MARIAN - The Colts host the Spartans, who just could be the best team in the Anthracite League this year ... North Schuylkill, 28-7.PANTHER VALLEY AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Panthers have bounced back the last two weeks from their loss to Schuylkill Valley. They really opened some eyes last week by routing Jim Thorpe. The Hurricanes look to bounce back from a loss to North Schuylkill. This one could be close ... Schuylkill Haven, 14-13.KUTZTOWN AT TAMAQUA - Blue Raiders can't afford a letdown as they go for their fifth win in a row. There'll be no looking ahead to North Schuylkill, who they play the following week ... Tamaqua, 42-0.SALISBURY AT NORTHERN LEHIGH - Bulldogs have pulled out some exciting wins lately and the feeling of returning to the post-season playoffs seems to be getting stronger and stronger ... Northern Lehigh, 28-7.NORTHWESTERN AT NOTRE DAME - Crusaders are trying to rebuild the right way, but Tigers need this one real bad ... Northwestern, 35-0.PALISADES AT PALMERTON - Blue Bombers showed in the last two minutes that they can still pull out a victory. Now it's time to bury the Palisades curse that has caused them to lose 11 straight to the Purple and Black ... Palmerton, 14-13.POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST AT LEHIGHTON - Two teams who have been playing with backup quarterbacks the last couple of weeks. The Cardinals got routed by Stroudsburg, while the Indians were shocked by Pleasant Valley last week. It's Homecoming in Lehighton so let's go with ... Lehighton, 21-14.WYOMING VALLEY WEST AT PLEASANT VALLEY - The Bears are taking steps in the right direction. Even though George Curry is gone from WVW, they still hold the edge ... Wyoming Valley West, 28-14.EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH AT POCONO MOUNTAIN WEST - This one could be a real close one as the Timberwolves and Panthers are about as even as they come. Gotta go with the home team here ... Pocono Mountain West, 21-20.SOUTHERN LEHIGH AT PEN ARGYL - I haven't picked the Spartans right all year. When I pick them to win, they lose. When I pick them to lose, they win. Watch out Feif! ... Southern Lehigh, 27-14.PARKLAND AT FREEDOM - The Trojans had a tough time with Nazareth last week. This week they should have it a little easier ... Parkland, 21-7.NORTHAMPTON AT EMMAUS - The Konkrete Kids have played some solid football thus far, but we'll have to give the Green Hornets the edge here ... Emmaus, 21-14.ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT NAZARETH - The Vikings have the best record in the Lehigh Valley Conference and will face a stiff test this week against the Blue Eagles. I wouldn't be surprised if Nazareth picks up the win here, but I like ... Central Catholic, 14-13.LIBERTY AT WHITEHALL - I can't imagine the Hurricanes having as tough a time as they did in the first couple of weeks this season. The Zephyrs are having a decent year, but I'm going with Tim Moncman's boys here ... Liberty, 21-14.
