Witnesses to Monday's fatal accident at the Normal Square intersection in Mahoning Township are coming forward, said Police Chief Kenneth Barnes.

The crash, which happened at about 8 a.m., involved a van driven by Linda F. Huynh of Coaldale and a Regional EMS and Critical Care ambulance driven by Eugene Michael Crostley, 36.

Huynh, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Carbon County coroner Bob Miller on Wednesday said Huynh died of trauma caused by the accident. Crostley was taken to Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton, for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Barnes has said that Huynh was traveling north on Mill Road toward the Normal Square traffic light at the intersection of Rt. 443, Mill Road and Fritz Valley Road when the crash occurred. The van she was driving struck the ambulance, which was not on an emergency call, in a "T-bone" collision.

He said it will be about two weeks before a report is ready to be released. Barnes said he has asked state police to inspect the mechanics of both vehicles. Such inspections are "normal and routine" in serious accidents, he said.

Barnes said he interviewed two witnesses on Tuesday and expects to interview more.
