Letters to the Editor

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Dear Editor:

On January 12, 1915, the House of Representatives rejected a proposal to give women the right to vote. On January 12, 2010, Representative Tim Holden is rejecting The Affordable Health Care Act for America, robust legislation for vital Health Care Reform.

Dear Editor:

I read with great interest an article in the December 09 AARP Bulletin, "Aiming to Nab Medicare Fraudsters." I was shocked to learn that fraud perpetrated against both public and private health plans costs between $72 billion and $220 billion annually.

With all the discussion and spotlight on health care reform, my question is; "Why not start eliminating the fraud that costs Americans billions annually?" To realize there are individuals out there illegally billing and illegally receiving payments for services not provided is difficult for me to perceive.

Dear Editor:

Can you help me put a name to this?

My U.S. Representatives, Paul E. Kanjorski, recently sent out a bulk mailing of a form letter expressing his "concern" for senior citizens who will not get a cost of living adjustment to their Social Security benefits.

He wrote also that he has co-sponsored a bill to correct this.

He "hopes" that the House "will consider this bill in the near future." [Comforting.]

Dear Editor:

Here we are, just several weeks into the new year and already 11 Pennsylvanians have died as a result of domestic violence. This comes on the heels of a stunningly high number of domestic-related fatalities last year. Early data for 2009 put the death toll at 198 women, men and children.

Dear Editor:

Leroy J. Rider was his given name, but to the members of the NORTHEAST VARIETY BAND, he was -BUDD. That's capital B and two DD's, as he would soon tell you after he met you.

In his earlier years, Budd played upright bass with several of his Polka and Country bands, but his love of the banjo brought him to play with The Lehigh Valley Variety Band, The Keystone String Band, The Happy Mummers String Band, The Country Gentlemen and a band that he himself named, The 3-and one Band, three banjos and one accordion.

Special to The TIMES NEWS

We may be living in the golden age of information, but we are just snacking on the news.

On top of that, we are losing our focus and faced with countless distractions that make previous enjoyment such as reading a much more challenging task.

Whether it's an incoming cell phone call, an e-mail message on your Blackberry or the sudden thought that you haven't listened to voice messages on your home answering machine, we are constantly on high alert for checking on available information.

Dear Editor:

For over 35 Years (after serving in the US Army during the Vietnam mess) I was a Registered Republican. Due to the Republican Party's refusal to promote true health care reform, I switched to being a Democrat. Now it appears as though even the Democrat Party is allowing our Nation's True Need for health care reform slip away!

To correct this Health Care Reform at this time, before it is again too late, we must succeed with the following course of correction:

1 - Open The Health Care Conference Committee To Public Scrutiny (H.Res.847).

Dear Editor:

On Dec. 21, 2009, I went to a Northern Lehigh/Pen Argyl girls basketball game at Pen Argyl.

I could not believe the poor sportsmanship displayed by their fans, students and some school authority.

The harassment and name calling by Pen Argyl fans was uncalled for.

The Northern Lehigh girls were afraid to go down to one corner of the floor. People were told to slap the girls on the behind.

It was like being at a football game.

Dear Editor:

I hope everyone reads the excellent article in tonight's (1/12/10) Times News by Dr. Edward Miller concerning the many flaws in the current "healthcare reform" bill being proposed by the House and Senate.

I hope you readers write down the phone numbers and call your Senators and House Member so we do not have more government intrusion into our health care.

Janet Snyder,

Palmerton

Dear Editor:

Life's lessons number 8 in the Times News on December 26, 2009 (Back Again column) asserts that it is OK to get angry with God.

I don't agree.

It is never OK to get angry with God because He never does anything wrong. If we are angry with Him, we are angry at His doing what is right. What kind of sense does that make? Of course, maybe we don't really believe that everything He does is right even though we say we do.

How difficult is it to perceive that the Holy Spirit will never inspire us to rant against God, but Satan most assuredly will?
