Lock Haven University has released the names of students who achieved dean's list recognition for the spring 2012 semester. The dean's honor list, prepared at the end of each semester, recognizes those students who have achieved academic distinction. To qualify for the dean's list, the student must have earned a GPA of at least 3.5 in 12 hours of letter grades.

Area students named to the dean's list are as follows:

Lehigh County:

Nicholas K. Boyd, New Tripoli, junior, Health Sciences/Pre-physical Therapy; and Alycia J. DeMilio, New Tripoli, sophomore, Criminal Justice;

Dreyer

Sarah L. Dreyer, daughter of Thomas Dreyer and Wendy Dreyer of Lehighton,graduated magna cum laude, from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, Calif., with a 3.07 GPA. She received her associate degree in fashion merchandising and marketing, and was on the dean's list each semester there. Commencement exercises were held on June 16.

Dreyer is a 2010 graduate of Palmerton Area High School, where she graduated with a 3.5 GPA, was on the tennis team, and became a Big Sister.

Army Pfc. George A. Rohlfing has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Christopher S. Zellner graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Zellner earned distinction as an honor graduate.

John Schmerfeld of Arlington, Va, son of Lloyd and the late Monica Schmerfeld of Quakake, was presented the 2011 Eugene W. Surber Professional Fisheries Biologist Award from the Virginia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Climate Change Coordinator for the National Wildlife Refuge System, Schmerfeld was cited for his work as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Division (NRDAR), a position he held from 2000 to 2010.

Kmetz

Ashley Kmetz of Hauto Estates, Nesquehoning, graduated May 24 from Luzerne County Community College with an associate degree of applied science in dental hygiene.

She was a member of the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Phi Alpha, and graduated second in her class.

Ashley also received the professionalism award in dental hygiene.

Turner

Brandon Turner, son of David and Michele Turner of Barnesville, graduated cum laude from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, with a bachelor's degree in Bio-Chemistry. Commencement exercises were held May 20.

While attended Muhlenberg College, Turner was a member of the Muhlenberg "Mules" football team for three years and was a recipient of the Muhlenberg Presidential Scholarship for all four years of his studies. He was named to the dean's list for numerous semesters. He was also a college tutor and worked in the research lab.

Everett

Courtney Everett of Lehighton just left her home in Lehighton to begin a year of service in eastern Europe. She will be teaching English to Slovakian teens at a Lutheran High School in Tisovec, Slovakia. The position is sponsored by the Global Mission Division of the Evangelical Lutheran in America (ELCA). Courtney is a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mahoning.

Marine Corps Pvt. Derrick L. Amede, son of Jacinth E. and Patrick O. Amede of Kunkletown, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C.
