Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library is gearing up for its Spring Storytime sessions. This year's theme is "See If You Can Guess the Theme for the Day." Sessions are open to children between the ages of 2 and 5.

Storytime begins March 7 and will continue for 10 consecutive weeks. Identical programs will be held Mondays and Tuesdays, from 10-11 a.m. Sessions will include stories and crafts.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Feb. 22 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 29 members in attendance.

Treasurer Shirley Becker conducted the business meeting. Jane Springer offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Becker. Get well cards were sent to James Valentine and Gayle Wall.

Martin and Becker provided inspirational readings.

The group meets the second and fourth Monday of every month. Anyone 50 or older is welcome to join.

Rush taxes

Rush Township tax collector Dolores Walck has set new office hours for 2011. During the months of March and April, the office will be open Tuesdays, from 6-8 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 9-11 a.m. Hours will be extended for the last week of the discount period. In addition to the Tuesday and Wednesday hours, the office will be open, Thursday, April 28 from 10-11 a.m. and from 6-7 p.m.

Hours during May and June will be Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9-10 a.m.

Adult day care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for March, including a visit from St. Jerome's kindergarten students on March 18.

Other activities planned for the month include: March 2, bingo; March 7, communion; March 8, cooking class; March 14, sing-a-long with Audrey Christ; March 16, Salvation Army and foot doctor visits; March 21, craft day; March 23, monthly birthday party; March 28, indoor cookout.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Last week's meeting was attended by 72 members. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and offered readings. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Guardian Angel."

The Tamaqua Boys Soccer Boosters will meet Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., at La Dolce Casa on West Broad Street. Anyone interested in supporting the team is welcome to attend.

Kindergarten orientation

The Tamaqua Area School District will hold an orientation night for kindergarten students on Feb. 22, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Tamaqua Elementary School. Parents of kindergarten students for the school year 2011-2012 will be provided with information about what programs the district has to offer, the benefits of different tracts of learning and other general information needed to get students ready for registration and the first day of school.

Writers conference

The Black Diamond Writers Network will conduct the region's second Write It Right writers' conference on April 16, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Genetti's Best Western Inn, Hazleton.

Keynote speaker will be Maria V. Snyder, a New York Times best selling author. She will share tips on the "path to publication."

Day-long events will include workshops on writing-related topics as well as an author book fair.

TEPTO

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization met Jan. 10 in the school library with 20 members in attendance.

Topics included a dance for students in grades three through five, which will be held today, from 7-9 p.m., in the school gym. Cell phones are not permitted.

Due to the number of snow days this year, classes will be in session on President's Day, Feb. 21. Jay Smarr will present a program at the Rush Elementary School Feb. 22 and at the Tamaqua Elementary School Feb. 23. A Choral Concert will be at the Tamaqua Middle School at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23.
