Cross country

The Tamaqua Cross Country Boosters will meet Jan. 18, at 7 p.m., in the senior high school cafeteria.

Anyone interested in supporting the teams is welcome to attend.

ACS Relay

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life for Tamaqua and surrounding communities will meet at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10, at the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center on Van Gelder Street.

This meeting is open to all past/current participants as well as anyone else interested in becoming involved.

TOPS

The local chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets Wednesdays in the education room at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. Weigh-ins begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by a short business session and a program.

TOPS is a weight loss support group for men and women of all ages. Members learn sensible nutrition, portion control and lifestyle changes that promote lifelong health. Visitors are welcome to attend their first meeting without obligation, free of charge.

The Tamaqua Area High School Guidance Department will host a Financial Aid Night on Monday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Tamaqua Area Auditorium

Cathy Caffrey, Assistant Regional Director for PHEAA, will be going over the FAFSA form in detail and will be answering any general financial aid questions.

Any college bound senior or junior student and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Calvary Evangelical

Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Catawissa and Valley roads, Lewistown Valley, will hold its morning worship service on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 10:25 a.m. The Rev. Brian Reading, pastor, will present a message entitled "Which Must Come First."

At 9:15 a.m., Sunday School classes will be held for all ages. Nursery service is available.

There will be no 6:30 p.m. praise, worship and Bible study. The public is welcome to join in an "informal" small group gathering this week on Jan. 2.

Members of the Tamaqua Area High School Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving teams recently collected over 60 toys for the local Toys For Tots drive to assist children that are less fortunate.

The Tamaqua Swimming/Diving team is coached by Eric Lech.

St. Jerome's Church

St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, West Broad Street, will hold Mass on New Year's Eve, Friday, Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. and on New Year's Day, Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 at 9 a.m.

The Sunday Mass schedule for this weekend will remain the same, with the Vigil Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon and Masses at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The parish office will be closed on Friday for the New Year's holiday. It will reopen on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at 9 a.m.

Adult day care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for the month of January, including: Jan. 3, communion; Jan. 5, bingo and craft day; Jan. 12, sing-along with Audrey Christ; Jan. 17, cooking class; Jan. 19, Salvation Army visit; Jan. 20, visit from St. Jerome's kindergarten class; Jan. 21, hat day; Jan. 24, visit from Skye the therapy dog; Jan. 26, monthly birthday party; Jan. 28, pancake day.

In addition to weekly sing-alongs and social games, hairstyling and manicure services are available. Both require advance notice.

Tax exemptions

The Schuylkill County and Tamaqua Borough Per Capita and Occupation Tax Exemption forms for the year 2011 are currently available for Borough of Tamaqua residents.

The exemption forms can be obtained at the Tamaqua Municipal Building, 320 E. Broad St., Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Forms will also be available at tax collector Alan Keer's office, the Tamaqua Area School District Administration building, the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, Majestic House Apartment Complex, the Tamaqua Public Library and the Tamaqua Post Office.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held its annual Christmas party on Dec. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 46 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld offered opening remarks. The event was catered by Christy Joy and included a gift exchange. Favors were provided by Betty Brobst and Eleanor Schmerfeld, while Hub and Shirley Becker donated Christmas lollipops.

Vice President Rhoda Purnell was welcomed back following an extended absence.

Writers' workshop

The Black Diamond Writers' Network and the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association will combine forces to sponsor a workshop on visioning and setting goals. The workshop will be held Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library. Guest speaker will be Cathy Colangelo, a life enhancement and career coach based in Weatherly. The public is welcome.
