Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Feb. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 41 members and one guest, Eleanor Arner, in attendance.

Vice President Rhoda Purnell conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker.

Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Feb. 8 at the Clamtown Tavern. Lori Shmerfeld hosted the meeting, treating members to wings and pizza.

Topics discussed included upcoming events, including a pancake breakfast fundraiser on March 10 at Applebee's in Hazleton; the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt on March 31 at the Bungalow Park; and the mid-eastern convention on June 22-24 in Gettysburg.

Following the business meeting, desserts were served by Donna Hiles and Secret Sister Valentine's gifts were exchanged.

Green challenge

"Helping Wildlife" is the theme for the 2012 Schuylkill County Green Challenge, open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade, in all county public and non-public schools. The challenge has been divided into two age group categories a poster competition for kindergarten through fourth grade, and an essay contest for fifth to eighth grade students.

There will be cash prizes for individual students and mini grants for the schools.

Board of Health

The February meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Randolph Gormley, James Gormley, Earl Boettger, Shirley Becker and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Barron submitted his report for January, during which time he received and adjusted three complaints. The complaints were: two complaints concerning rubbish/trash; and a rental unit without heat. There were no cases of reportable diseases last month.

Kindergarten registration

Registration for kindergarten classes, in the Tamaqua Area School District, for the 2012-2013 school year, will be held March 12, 13 and 14 at the Rush Elementary School and on March 15 at the West Penn Elementary School.

Registration hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration packets will be available at all three of the district's elementary schools, beginning Feb. 27, or at the Tamaqua Area School District website at www.tamaqua.K12.pa.us. Appointments will then be scheduled for March.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Feb. 2 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 84 members and one guest, Joanne Ross, in attendance.

Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Point of View." Reports were also offered by Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber.

Jayne Myers was added to the sick list and Mary Herbig is recuperating at home following a hospitalization.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

Tax exemptions

The Tamaqua Area School District is accepting Assessed Occupation Tax exemption applications for the 2012-20113 school year. This will cover the 2012 calendar year. This year's forms are goldenrod in color.

Retired persons and housewives with no earned income, who have previously been exempted, do not need to file again unless their status has changed and they are now earning income.

Also, those who are disabled or at least 75 years of age, who have been specifically notified of their exemption by the district, need not file an application.

Zion Lutheran

The Rev. Jeffrey Kistler will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Also on Sunday, the senior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m. and the scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, property committee meeting at 6 p.m., scouts meet at 6:30 p.m. and the finance meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, scouts meet at 6 p.m.

The annual meeting will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 12.

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Jan. 24 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 41 members in attendance.

Vice President Rhoda Purnell conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker. A get well card was sent to Melody Weicker. One new member, Joyce Krell, was welcomed to the group.

Birthday wishes were extended to Edna Fegley, Doris Yeager and Gloria McHale. Jane Springer is reportedly in the Hometown Nursing Center.
