Pool passes

Applications are now available for season passes to the H.D. Buehler Memorial (Bungalow) Pool. Opening day will be June 4, at 11:30 a.m. No season or daily passes will be available that day.

Steeply discounted rates for Tamaqua Area School District residents are made available through the generosity of the John E. Morgan Foundation and rates remain the same as last summer.

Kindergarten news

The Tamaqua Area School District will have a make up day for kindergarten registration for the 2011-2012 school year. The district is offering this opportunity to parents/guardians of kindergarten age children who missed the March session.

The make up day will be held May 24. To schedule an appointment, call (570) 668-3306, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.

DARE graduation

DARE graduation will be held April 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held in the Tamaqua Middle School Auditorium.

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile held March 30 collected a total of 49 units of the "gift of life," held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army Center on West Broad Street.

Multi-gallon pins were awarded to Wendy Shlanta, two gallons, and Carl Heisler, 10 gallons.

Volunteers included Jack Quinn, Bob Zeplin, Jack Rarick, Joe Rimm, Randy Gormley, Bob and Dolly Shirey, Ardis Gerhard, Edie Hoffman and Robert and Darlene Zeckman.

This visit was sponsored by Bowe, Lisella and Bowe, attorneys at law.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its first regular meeting of 2011 in the social hall of Zions Church, Lewistown Valley. The business session was conducted by President June Leiby. Special guest speaker was Dr. Joseph Sabol.

Class of 1943

The Tamaqua High School Class of 1943 is planning a 68-year anniversary reunion for this summer. The event will be held June 18 at the Owl Creek Reservoir and will include a picnic style luncheon.

Rush bloodmobile

The Rush Township Bicentennial Committee will sponsor an American Red Cross Bloodmobile on April 5, from 1-6 p.m., at the township municipal building.

Adult day care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for April, including the monthly birthday party on April 21.

Other activities planned for the month include: April 4, communion; April 6, social games; April 11, shopping trip; April 13, craft day; April 18, visit from St. Jerome's kindergarten students; April 19, Easter candy/bake sale; April 20, Salvation Army visit; April 22, closed; April 25, cooking class; April 27 sing-a-long with Audrey Christ.

Walk for life

Care Net of Tamaqua, an organization providing services to pregnant women, plans to open an office in town at 223 E. Broad St.

The center will provide life-affirming guidance, counseling, prenatal classes, parenting classes and much more to area women and families.

Sorority news

Members of the local Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met in the conference room of the offices of International Paper in Hazleton. Participants were treated to a light lunch and were presented with goodie bags. Patti Burke served as hostess and presented a program about St. Patrick's Day.

An election of officers was held and the slate will be: Lori Schmerfeld, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Donna Sterling, recording secretary; Pat Kibbler, corresponding secretary; and Marie Umbriac, treasurer.

Dog walk

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue group will host its Fourth Annual Dog Walk on May 7, following along the Schuylkill Valley Heritage Trail.

The walk will begin at the Newkirk Tunnel Environmental Education Area along SR209, just west of Tamaqua. Participants will head west for one mile, then return to the registration area.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with the walk starting at noon. Registration is required.

Looking good

The American Cancer Society will host Look Good, Feel Better makeover workshops from 4-6 p.m., March 28, at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital's Board Room, Coaldale, and at the Schuylkill Medical Center South, 420 S. Jackson St., Pottsville.

The sessions are free and open to all local female cancer patients actively undergoing cancer treatment.

During the session, trained cosmetologists will meet with patients to discuss ways of using makeup and accessories to minimize appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
