Electronic recycling

Due to new regulations, residents of Tamaqua are no longer able to place old electronic devices out for curbside pick up on trash day. To alleviate the hardship this has caused Advanced Green Solutions Inc. will hold a free electronic recycling event from 8 a.m. until noon, May 18 at the Tamaqua Transfer Station, 20 Sewer Plant Road, Tamaqua.

Arts night

The Tamaqua Area Middle School Spring Art Show and Choral Concert will be held May 2 in the middle school. The art show will be held from 7-7:30 p.m. in the hallway outside of the auditorium. Students from sixth, seventh and eighth grades will have their art work displayed, including paintings, 3-D interiors, murals, sketches, masks, group projects, cultural art, tiles, watercolor, fashion design, collages and more. There is no entry fee for the show.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club will hold its Annual Spring Tea on April 30 in the social hall of Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Members are reminded to bring tea cups, finger sandwiches and desserts. Reservations are required and may be made by calling (570) 668-4288 or 467-3400. Set up for the tea will be held at 9 a.m. the same day.

Veterans help

A representative from the Disabled American Veterans will be available once a month at Tamaqua Borough Hall to offer free veterans claim service for veterans as well as widows and dependent children of veterans. Information and assistance will be provided for service connected disability claims, low income pension, health care claims for service connected disabilities and low income veterans and other questions concerning veterans' benefits.

The representative will be at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St., on May 13, June 10 and July 8.

Clean up

Tamaqua's participation in the Schuylkill-Keep It Pretty Spring Clean Up Campaign will be a little different from years past, as participants will be treated to a free lunch. The refreshments will be provided by Rural LISC, represented by Joseph Yarzebinski, a familiar figure in the borough.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at the M and T Bank lot, Broad and Center Streets. LISC will also be providing free T-shirts to the first 20 volunteers.

Healthy living

St. Luke's University Health Network is sponsoring a free series of health related talks at the Tamaqua YMCA, located at 1201 E. Broad St. Presenter for the April 22 session will be Vanessa Perez, CRNP, who will discuss the "Importance of Sleep.

The sessions will be held at noon and at 6 p.m. and are open to the public.

This will be the last session until the fall.

Democrats to meet

The Eastern Schuylkill Democrats will meet at 7:30 pm. on Monday, April 22. The meeting will be held at the East End Fire Company on East Broad Street.

Day of prayer

Bethany Evangelical Congregational will be hosting a National Day of Prayer Event on May 2. This year's theme is "Pray For America," based on Matthew 12:21.

A bill establishing the National Day of Prayer was signed in 1952 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, to be set each year by the sitting president. In 1988, the law was amended establishing the first Thursday in May for the observance.

Tamaqua's event will be held at noon at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St. The public is welcome to attend.

YMCA blood drive

The Tamaqua YMCA will host an American Red Cross Bloodmobile April 25 from 1-6 p.m. at the Y facility, located in the former Jamesway Shopping Center at the east end of the borough.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good health is eligible to donate blood.

Food pantry

The Friends in Need Food Pantry, located at Trinity United Church of Christ, is seeking donations to replenish their shelves. Needed nonperishable items include: April, baked beans and applesauce: May, spaghetti sauce and pasta; June, soups.

The pantry assists Tamaqua Area School District families in need by providing groceries.

The pantry also needs monetary donations to continue providing these families with perishable food items, which are included in every food order.

Pool passes

Applications for seasonal passes to the Bungalow Pool are now available. Anyone who returns their application and fee to Tamaqua Borough Hall before April 30 is guaranteed to have their pass before opening day. Discounted rates are made available through the generosity of the John E. Morgan Foundation.
