Al-Anon adult children meetings take place on Monday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, Route 209 and Gilbert Road, Gilbert (behind the Turkey Hill). Missionary visitors

Kurt and Cynthia Zimmerman, career missionaries with World Gospel Mission, will be visiting Effort United Methodist Church Sept. 18-19.

Serving in Bolivia, the Zimmermans will speak and show slides at the 5 p.m. service Saturday evening and at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services on Sunday. Community residents are invited to attend any of the services.

While in Bolivia, Kurt Zimmerman has taught fifth and sixth grades and coached baseball and basketball. He serves as a youth leader, counselor, and music ministry team leader at Cristo Viene Church.

Special visit

The Western Pocono Lions Club will welcome its own member as speaker at this week's meeting, Bob Kelsey, currently the District Governor of District 14U.

Kelsey will detail his plans for the district and discuss the 2010 International Lions Convention held in Australia this past summer.

The club will meet at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 15, at The Hamilton in Saylorsburg.

Harvest Home

Come join St. Matthew's UCC in celebration of Harvest Home on Sunday, Sept. 19 at the 9 a.m. worship service.

You can bring any produce for display purposes. Nonperishable food items may be brought to be donated to Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network's food distribution.

A special blessing will be given to the givers.

The American Legion West End Memorial Post 927 in Gilbert will host its 9th Annual 9-11 Candle Light Memorial Service on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.

"We have not forgotten. Come and show us that you haven't."

Guest speakers will include members of the State Police and US military.

There will be music and lite refreshment.

Bring your lawn chairs. The event is subject to the weather.

Open house

Polk Elementary School will have an open house for all grades on Monday, Sept. 13, from 6-8 p.m.

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School's 7th grade will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. Teachers will be available so that parents can meet them.

Pleasant Valley Elementary School's kindergarten and grades 1st and 3rd will be holding an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 6-8 p.m. The 2nd and 4th grades will hold open house on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 6-8 p.m.

Chestnuthill PIC

The Pride in Chestnuthill group will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Chestnuthill Township municipal building.

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, in the district offices in Brodheadsville.

Stopping hunger

Effort United Methodist Church's hunger ministry had 37 families stop in this past Saturday for food baskets. That totaled 130 people.

Confirmation class

Confirmation classes will start on Sunday, Sept. 12 at St. Matthew's UCC at 10:30 a.m. This class is for anyone in seventh grade and older. You can call 610-381-2442 for more information.

Sunday School

Sunday School at St. Matthew's UCC will restart on Sunday, Sept. 12 with a Rally Day program, at 10:30 a.m. There are Sunday School classes for all ages beginning with preschool to adults. Come and join them in worship, song and lessons.

Western Pocono Lioness Club donation

The Western Pocono Lioness Club voted to send a memorial donation to the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network in remembrance of the late Lioness Betty Ford, a much deserving PVEN volunteer. She died this August.

The group will next meet for a regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 28, with Dr. Bryn, chiropractor, from Life is Good Chiropractic, speaking to the group.
