Property signs

Chestnuthill Property ID Signs must be up by the end of July. There is still time to order your sign at the park and install by the deadline. Proceeds benefit the West End Fire Co., ambulance and WEPOSC. Hours to order at the park building are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. PVEN needs cereal and sneakers

Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is low on food and funds. To help, St. Matthew's UCC is collecting cereal for the next few months, as well as donations of any nonperishable food item.

In addition to food, PVEN is having a sneaker drive for school age children for the upcoming school year. They must be mostly solid white or black, as per the Pleasant Valley School District dress code.

Collecting for children

Effort UMC's United Methodist Women's group will be meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, July 9. The group is collecting donations of new book bags and school supplies for children of the church's Supplemental Family Resource Center to be distributed in August.

At the July 9 meeting Nita Nydem will lead the devotions and Ruth Flechsig and Dee Juris are in charge of refreshments.

Waggin Tails Rescue Annual Picnic

This year the Waggin Tails Rescue Annual Picnic will be on Sunday July 8 from noon until 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on Route 209 in Gilbert, in the back where the picnic tables are.

There will be lots of food and fun.

They will need people to bring burgers, burger buns, hot dogs, hot dog buns, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, paper products and soda, along with plastic utensils, ice, cups, charcoal, lighter fluid, dessert items and condiments.

PV school board

The Pleasant Valley Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday in the district office in Brodheadsville.

Free fun time

The Western Pocono Lioness Club, in cooperation with the West End Park and Open Space Commission, will host its Patriotic Coloring contest for children 5-12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville. Winners must be present at award time.

Other activities include crafts, writing a letter to a soldier and free ice cream.

The activity is in honor of the Fourth of July.

St. Matthew's VBS

St. Matthew's UCC's Vacation Bible School will be held from July 30-Aug. 3. They are in need of volunteers to teach, assist and help in the kitchen.

Join Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts is for boys who are 11 years old, or who have completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old, but not yet 18 years old. Boy Scouts learn everything from rock climbing, fishing, cooking, first aid, emergency preparedness, wilderness survival skills, plumbing, electricity, personal management, learn leadership skills, respect for others, and how important the community is, as well as family and much more. They are taught and instructed how to be good, strong leaders for the future.

Helping others

The Western Pocono Lions Club has donated over $4,000 during this fiscal year. Entities receiving financial aid are: Feed the Hungry, Salvation Army, Garden of Giving, Lions Clubs International Foundation, scholarships to local youth, Beacon Lodge, a campership to Beacon Lodge to an individual with sight-related problems, and the Northeast Eye bank.

In addition to financial support, the group gives hands-on help to the community.

Strawberry Festival

St. Matthew's UCC is holding its annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 17 in the picnic grove, located on Grove Road, off White Church Lane, rain or shine. The worship service will be at 10 a.m. and the refreshment stand will be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. They need donations of homemade sponge cakes.

There will be a car show from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., registration until 12 p.m.

The entertainment will be the Quartet 5 from 1-4 p.m.
