VFW auxiliary

The ladies auxiliary to the VFW Post 8008 will hold a meeting on Tuesday, April 13, at the post home beginning at 6:30 p.m. Nomination and election of officers for 2010-2011 will be held at the April meeting.

The 61st Anniversary dinner of the auxiliary's charter will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m., at Macaluso's. Reservations are required. Contact Maureen at (570) 669-9578 to make your reservation. Deadline is April 18.

Offering scholarship

The Summit Hill Lions Club is offering a $250 award to a graduating senior from Marian Catholic and Panther Valley High School for community service.

For more information on this award, contact the guidance counselor at your respective high school.

The deadline for applicants is March 31.

The Nesquehoning Lions Club will hold its next meeting on Monday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lions Club building.

There will be no dinner at this meeting.

FCSLA plans meeting

The Frances C. Jakabein District of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association will hold its spring meeting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25, in Macaluso's Lantern, Route 209 and 93 in Nesquehoning. Host branches will be Nesquehoning 410 and Hauto 414.

Summit Hill

Anthracite League

The Anthracite Little League (comprised of the former Summit Hill and Nesquehoning leagues) continued its planning for the upcoming season at a meeting held Sunday night.

All levels of play will begin practices this week. Parents can contact president Roobhenn Smith, (570) 645-2272 or 484-547-3522 for additional information.

The league will hold cleanup days at both fields on Saturday, March 27. All parents and/or volunteers are asked to help get the fields ready for the season.

Summit Hill

SHCIO to meet

The Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization will hold a special meeting tonight at 7 o'clock in the training room of the Diligence Fire Company No. 1. The purpose of the session is to discuss tables and chairs for the Community Room that is part of the new fire company complex. All SHCIO members are encouraged to attend.

American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, recently recognized three members of the post for years of continuous service.

Golden Agers

The Panther Valley Golden Agers had 47 members present at the last meeting after several months of absence due to inclement weather. President Ronnie Bazik opened the meeting with Bernice Strepko reading "His Touch." Sue Dopira read a brief history of St. Patrick's Day.

Twenty-three birthday celebrants were seated around a table decorated with a St. Patrick's Day theme. Janet Keich won the floral arrangement donated by Porvaznik Florist. Gifts were also donated by Kennedy Pharmacy. Alex Shereba sang the birthday greeting wishing all many happy years.

The Panther Valley Library, Located at 117 E. Bertsch, Lansford, is looking for volunteers.

If you love books, want to boost your resume, or have to do court ordered or school assigned community service, the library can help you.

The library is looking for people to shelve books, do some data entry, light cleaning, children's programming,etc.

It's a great way to meet new people by giving back to your community. You may volunteer for one to four hours per week, as follows: Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 4 -8 p.m., Wednesday 4-6 p.m., and Thursday 6 p.m.
