Golden Agers

The meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers on June 14 opened with a Flag Day Prayer given by Vice President Shirley Pavlick. It was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America."

Twelve birthday celebrants for April, May, and June were honored. "Happy Birthday" was sung by the members and a Byzantine hymn was sung by Alex Shereba. Rose Mary Mikulski was the winner of the floral arrangement donated by Porvaznik's Florist. Kennedy Pharmacy donated birthday gifts.

The Panther Valley High School graduates who purchased graduation handshake photos from Flexer Photo Studios can pick them up in the high school office between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Summit Hill

SHCIO to meet

A special meeting of the Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization will be held on Monday, June 28, at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Members will be discussing a Labor Day fundraiser and the Ludlow Park Project. Borough residents are welcome to join the organization and offer ideas to improve the town.

Wednesday evening worship

At 7 p.m. each Wednesday, St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, holds an informal worship: a spiritual, peaceful evening service with Holy Communion.

All are welcome to this relaxed, brief evening prayer. For those who wish to come early, a simple supper is served at 6 p.m., followed by a brief Bible study at 6:30.

The Summit Hill Crime Watch will hold a meeting on Monday, June 28 at 7 p.m. in the Summit Hill Borough Hall.

Cyber Safety Workshop

A Cyber Safety Workshop will be presented by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office on Thursday, July 8, at First Congregational Church, 123 E. Ruddle St., Coaldale.

Youngsters in kindergarten through fifth grade will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Students in sixth through 12th grades will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Topics will include: Safe Surf, MySpace, Facebook and Cyber Bullying.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in attending.

Coaldale's recycling schedule will change as of Tuesday, July 6. All recycling will be picked up by Tamaqua Transfer. The pickup will be every two weeks on a Tuesday; the entire town will be done on that day.

Pickup dates for July are July 6 and July 20.

All recycling must be placed at the curb the night before pickup. The borough will no longer have a drop-off area.

Summit Hill

Methodist Charge

The schedule for the Summit Hill/Coaldale United Methodist Charge for Sunday, June 20, is as follows:

Worship services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Summit Hill United Methodist Church and at 11 a.m. in the Coaldale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Burgess Gordon, pastor, will officiate at both services.

The adult Sunday school will meet at 10 a.m. in the Coaldale church.

First Congregational Church

Morning Worship in celebration of Father's Day will be held at First Congregational Church at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 20

Vacation Bible School begins Monday, June 21, and continues through Friday, June, 25, from 6-8 p.m. daily. Activities will include: opening exercise, lessons, snacks, song practice and crafts.

The theme for the week is "Heroes."

The closing service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 25, following the school session from 6-7 p.m.

Summit Hill

Presbyterian church

Beginning on Sunday, June 20, the Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Summit Hill, will be on a summer schedule.

The weekly Sunday morning service will be held at 9:30 a.m. This will continue until Sept. 12, when the worship service will return to normal times. During the summer, there will be no junior choir, Sunday school or adult Bible class.

VBS is planned

The community Vacation Bible School will be held Monday through Friday, July 26-30, at the Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Summit Hill.

Coaldale is forming a flag committee to take responsibility for the borough's American flag displays.

A meeting for anyone interested in joining is scheduled for 7 p.m., June 21 at the American Legion Post 170.

The meeting is open to all Coaldale-based nonprofit organizations.

Officers will be elected, and the group plans to discuss fundraising and how the town will display its flags for veterans' and summer holidays.

Refreshments will be served.
