The following are a listing of upcoming activities at the Panther Valley Senior Center, 90 E. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning. All activities begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise noted. Sign in by 10:30 a.m. for the next day's lunch.

Ÿ Wednesday: Mt. Airy at 10 a.m., center closed.

Ÿ July 17: Brain games.

Panther Valley Public Library

Here is what's happening at the Panther Valley Public Library for the month of July. The library is located at 117 E. Bertsch St. in Lansford.

At 6 p.m. Thursday there will be a special science program. "Pop Pop Zing" will be presented by Super Science and Amazing Art of PA.

Teen movie night will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday.

"Fizz Boom Read It's Magic" will be presented at 6 p.m. July 21.

The end of program recognition night for 7-12 year olds will take place at 6 p.m. July 28.

Summit Hill

Flag program

The Summit Hill Lions Club continues its American flag program in memory and honor of veterans from Summit Hill. The flag will fly in Ludlow Park in memory or honor of the veterans.

Family members of veterans, or veterans themselves, can request to be scheduled by contacting Joseph O'Gurek at 570-645-5171.

During the week of July 7, the flag will be flown in honor of Daniel E. Gieniec, who served as a corporal in the Army during the Philippines/Pacific Teatre of Operations during World War II.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held June 10, at the post home. Treasurer, Maureen Hirochek, presided at the session.

Membership stands at 60 for 2014, down from 66 last year. Three members passed away during the year.

The department convention was held in Lancaster June 18-21.

Donations were made to the National Presidents Visit to Pennsylvania in September and to the lunch program sponsored by Meeds Church.

Golden Agers

The June 9 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the club song.

A guest speaker from Diakon, Sue Johns, Pottsville explained the many functions of the organization and spoke about health care.

Names are being taken for the annual picnic to be held Aug. 11 at the No. 9 Museum grounds.

The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John's Slovak Lutheran Social Hall.

A guest speaker is scheduled. Dues must be paid in full before attending a meeting.

Summer lunch program

A free summer lunch program is offered for children at the following locations: Summit Hill Heritage Center, 1 W. Hazard St.; Grace Community Church, 15 W. Ridge St. in Lansford; and Christ Redeemer Church Building, 151 Third St. in Coaldale.

Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for children under the age of 18.

The menu for the coming week was listed in Wednesday's Times News.

Summit Hill

Historical Society to meet

The Summit Hill Historical Society will meet at the museum tonight at 7 o'clock.

The Lee Mantz Memorial Scholarships will be presented at the meeting.

Agenda items are the spaghetti dinner fundraiser at St. Gabriel's Club on Saturday, the anniversary of Ludlow Park rededication ceremony plans for 11 a.m. June 28, the Summit Hill Hootenanny, bus trips and future programs.

President Lou Vermillion will chair the meeting, which is open to all.

Flag program

The Summit Hill Lions Club is continuing its American flag program in memory and honor of veterans from Summit Hill.

Throughout the "good weather" months, the flag will fly in Ludlow Park in memory or honor of the veterans.

During the week of June 16, the flag will be flown in memory of the late Stanley B. Gieniec Sr. He served as a second lieutenant in the Army during World War II.
