Veterans service

The annual Veterans Memorial Day Service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 29, at First Congregational Church, Coaldale. Participating will be the Panther Valley High School JROTC and the Community Choir.

Veterans from World War I to the present will be honored for their service.

The service is open to the public.

On Wednesday, June 1, the church ministry group will visit St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital and Maple Shade at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

Borough office

The office of Summit Hill Borough secretary Kira Michalik will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, May 30-31, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

Registration for the 2011-2012 school year at Our Lady of the Angels Academy, Lansford, can be completed at the school office from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other arrangements can be made if this is inconvenient by calling the school office, (570) 645-7170 or 645-7101.

Summit Hill

St. Paul Lutheran

A special Memorial Day service will be held to remember our fallen heroes and to honor our veterans and service members on Sunday, May 29, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Summit Hill. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Carl Schweitzer, a retired pastor from Lehighton, will lead the service. Visitors are welcome to attend.

On Sunday, June 5, the parish's Confirmation class will meet at 6:30 p.m.

The WELCA group of the church will meet on Tuesday, June 7, at 12:30 p.m. in the church.

Summit Hill

Lions to meet

The last regularly-scheduled meeting of the Summit Hill Lions Club will be held on Tuesday, May 24, at 6 p.m. at the Parkview Inn. Dr. Kenneth Vermillion, president, will be in charge of the session.

The guests for the evening will be the club's 2011 scholarship winners and their families. The guest speaker for the evening will be Jeanne Miller from Lehigh-Carbon Community College.

First Congregational Church

Next week's schedule at First Congregational Church, Coaldale, is as follows:

Sunday, May 22 9 a.m. Morning Worship; 10 a.m. Sunday School.

Wednesday, May 25 6 p.m. Community Choir rehearsal.

All are welcome to take part in the choir and prepare for the Veterans' Memorial Day Service, which will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 29, at First Congregational.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary meets

The regular monthly meeting of the Nesquehoning VFW Ladies Auxiliary was held May 10 at the Post Home with President Amanda Breiner presiding.

Post and auxiliary members were present at Redner's May 13-15 for the annual Buddy Poppy promotion. The 2011-2012 Poppy Queen is Olivia Dacey; members of her court are Christina Dacey, Emma Kattner and Alyssa Kattner. The Buddy Poppy King is Nicholas Ellis; his court members are Anthony Ellis, Jacob Ellis and Anthony Santore.

Memorial Day Choir

Rehearsal for the Coaldale Memorial Day Choir will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at First Congregational Church, Ruddle Street.

Everyone is welcome to join the choir in honoring our country's service personnel and veterans.

The choir will sing at a special Memorial Day service at First Congregational Church at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 29.


Democratic Club

The Lansford Democratic Club is offering residents free rides for those who need them to polling places for Tuesday's Primary election.

The Panther Valley High School's JROTC will hold its Award Night on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the high school.

All former cadets are invited to honor SFC Steve Caddy in his final awards night.

Garden club news

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its Spring Tea in the Social Hall of Zion's Church in the Lewistown Valley. The local club, as well as the Weatherly Garden Club, the South Schuylkill Garden Club and the Hometown Social Club were represented by 60 members and guests. June Leiby, president of the Lewistown Club, conducted the business session.

Summit Hill

Food distribution

The Summit Hill Food Pantry distributes food to the needy in the community on a monthly basis. Distributions are usually made on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

The Summit Hill Lions Club members assist with the packaging and distributions of the food boxes.
