First Congregational Church

Morning Worship will be held at First Congregational Church at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, followed by Adult Sunday School at 10 a.m.

The church's Women's Class will hold its first meeting of the 2013-2014 year at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the church social hall. The theme of this meeting is Keeping a Childlike Innocence. All area women are invited to attend the meetings.

The nursing home ministry team will visit St. Luke's-Miners, Coaldale, at 11 a.m. and MapleShade, Nesquehoning, at 1:30 p.m., both on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Special meeting

of S.H. council

A special meeting of Summit Hill Borough Council will be held at 6:30 this evening in the borough hall.

The meeting is listed for general purposes.

Garbage collection


Because of Labor Day, there will be changes in the borough garbage collection next week.

Gail Miller, assistant secretary of Summit Hill borough, said:

Tuesday pickup will be on Wednesday.

Wednesday pickup will be on Thursday.

Also, the fall clean up dates have been announced.

Conservation Club

The next meeting of the Nesquehoning Conservation Club will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Maple Shade Meadows beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Plans for the Community Nature Park will be discussed along with a fall fish stocking.

Members are reminded to bring in their Redners Save-A-Tapes.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held Aug. 13, at the Post Home. President Ellen Driesbach presided.

Summit Hill

Prayer Partners in the Park

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., Prayer Partners in the Park, a non-denominational group, will meet at Ludlow Park in Summit Hill to offer prayer, song and worship.

Anyone interested in meeting to pray for personal requests and to pray for the community and the valley are encouraged to attend.

People from all faiths are welcome.

Hauto Fire Company will be testing its fire hoses throughout the day at New Columbus Fire Company on Monday, Aug. 26, beginning in the morning.

Residents may experience discolored water and low pressure.

Summit Hill Historical Society

The Summit Hill Historical Society will meet tonight, Aug 21, at 7 p.m. at the museum on West Ludlow Street. Plans for future improvements to Ludlow Park for the 100th anniversary in 2014 will be discussed. Meetings are open to the public.

St. John Lutheran

Tonight at 7 p.m., St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, will hold an informal worship. This will be a spiritual, peaceful, evening service with Holy Communion.

Lions meeting

The Coaldale Lions Club will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 5:45 p.m. in the Viennese Villa, 201 W. Ruddle St., with Robert E. Ames, president in charge.

Members are asked to note that the club will begin meeting once a month.

Meetings will be on the third Tuesday of each month.

The annual opening dinner of the Nesquehoning Woman's Club will be held on Monday, Sept. 16 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club with a social time beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Golden Agers

The second annual picnic of the Panther Valley Golden Agers will be held on Monday, Aug. 12, beginning at noon at the No. 9 Mine grounds. Members may arrive earlier to take part in scheduled activities.

Members celebrating birthdays in the months of May through August will be recognized at the next scheduled meeting to be held Aug. 26.

Mermon Ave. to close

Mermon Avenue in the Borough of Nesquehoning will be closed from Catawissa to Coal Street, beginning Monday, Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 9 in order to make repairs to the railroad crossing.

The Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization will meet on Monday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m at the historical museum on West Ludlow Street. SHCIO meetings are open to the public.
