Police Week

The week of May 9-16, the Borough of Palmerton will observe Police Week, and, in particular, to observe Saturday, May 15, as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Book club

The Third Monday Book Club will meet at noon, Monday, May 17, at the Palmerton Area Library. Extra copies of the selected book are available in the library.

Historical Society

The monthly program for the Palmerton Area Historical Society will be a visit to the Anoopam Mission and Hindu Temple on Clearview Road, Coplay. At 7 p.m. on Monday, May 10, host Shree Patel will give the group background before attending the Hindu service. Attendees will need a pair of socks. Those planning to attend will car pool from Hager Furniture Store parking lot, Palmerton, at 6 p.m. Transportation is available for those needing a ride. Lehighton Area Council of Carbon County Chamber of Commerce will be holding its bimonthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, at the Beacon 443 Restaurant. The featured speaker will be Girvin Janicki, manager of Lehighton Walmart. Janicki will be speaking about the new Walmart that is being erected along Route 443. He will be highlighting what the new store has to offer and other pertinent information concerning the store.

The Lehighton Area Democrats will be having their last meeting before the summer break on May 5 at 7 p.m. at Johnnie's Restaurant, 111 N. 1st St. in Lehighton. This meeting will be a social get-together and a preview of the new Democratic Election Headquarters at 101 N. 1st St. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

The Parryville Borough Council is interested in hearing your opinion on the current shared police service agreement with Weissport. The council is considering a proposal in which the borough would begin paying for this service. Council is interested in feedback from the residents on the proposal. The council meeting will be held on April 30 at 7 p.m. at the Parryville Fire Company to share your thoughts.

Lions Club

The Palmerton Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, May 3, at the Palmerton Community Center, 217 Franklin Ave., Palmerton.

Newspaper drive

The men and boys of St. John's Lutheran Church will hold their monthly newspaper drive on Saturday, May 1. There will be one sweep of the Palmerton, Aquashicola, and Little Gap areas beginning at 8 a.m.

Papers should be bundled and placed within sight of the collectors. They are collecting papers only, no magazines. The shiny inserts are acceptable. They also need grocery size brown paper bags.

Navy Club meets

The Navy Club of the USA, USS Carbon County Ship 260, will meet at 7:30 p.m. April 26 at the Lehighton American Legion. Commander Stanley Jaroszewski will be in charge.

All members are asked to attend, as votes will be held on some important questions. There will be a guest speaker.

Interested parties, guests and new members are welcome.

The club is open to all Coast Guard, Marine, Merchant Marine and Navy veterans, active and reserves.

A free community meal will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 365 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton. All are welcome to attend for a meal and fellowship.
