An orientation program for all students entering Lehighton Area High School for the first time will take place in the high school auditorium at 10 a.m. August 10.

The program will include an explanation of student schedules, bell schedules, student dress codes, extra-curricular activities, lunch, student conduct, transportation arrangements, etc.

Students will be given their homeroom assignments at that time. Please plan on attending this important session.

Those students present will also be given a tour of the building by members of Student Council.

Preschool openings

Jack and Jill Preschool, 230 Iron St., Lehighton, has a few vacancies in both the pre-kindergarten and primary classes for this fall.

This outreach of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church provides a strong background in school preparation along with Christian teaching from a Lutheran perspective.

Opportunities for prayer and worship are a large part of the Jack and Jill program.

Students participate in weekly worship in Trinity's sanctuary, led by either the Rev. Robert vonFrisch or Karen Bizup.

Newspaper drive

The monthly newspaper drive of the men and boys of St. John's Lutheran Church will take place on Saturday, Aug. 6. There will be one sweep of the Palmerton, Aquashicola, and Little Gap areas beginning at 8 a.m.

Papers should be bundled and placed within sight of the collectors. They are collecting papers only, no magazines. The shiny inserts are acceptable. They also need grocery size brown paper bags.

Cub Pack picnic

The first annual Cub Pack 145 picnic will take place from noon until 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7 at the Ashfield Grove, just off Lizard Creek Road. Cub families, past, present and future are welcome. Bring a covered dish and a dessert to share. Food and drinks are provided.

Activities like baseball, volleyball, horseshoes, fishing and more will be available.

Picnic in the Park

Franklin Township Lions Club will host a "Picnic in the Park," from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Phifer Ice Dam Park.

The day will feature bingo from 2-3 p.m., calk walk from 3-4 p.m., and the Mudflaps from 4-6 p.m.

The Lions will be serving food in the pavilion throughout the day. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Miller Bloodmobile

Miller-Keystone Blood Center will conduct a bloodmobile at the First United Church of Christ's air-conditioned Fellowship Hall (next to Borough Hall) on Monday, Aug. 15. Registration hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This visit is sponsored by Janet Snyder.

Off-street parking will be available at Penn Northeast (both sides of the building), and at the former Golden Key parking lot, by permission of the owners.

The Palmerton Area Historical Society will host its annual picnic on August 8 at the farm of member, Bert Holczman, 540 Sand Quarry Road, Ashfield.

The society will provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, rolls, condiments and beverages. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish and/or dessert.

Card shower

Friends of Maureen Karas, of Mahoning Valley, are being asked to remember her as she recovers from recent hip surgery.

Maureen is a three-time cancer survivor and resides with her son, Chet.

She formerly worked in the shoe departments of Laneco in Lehighton and Jamesway in Tamaqua.
