Slatington Lions Club

The Slatington Lions Club expresses its thanks to outgoing president Ted Harlan, and welcomes Jim Layland as incoming president, as well as Susan Layland as first lady. The club also acknowledges Lloyd Hopkins for his many years as secretary, and welcomes Dale Benninger as the new secretary.

Lions Harold Rauch (July 6) and Linde Roth (July 7) are celebrating birthdays.

Rotary Club award

Ron Williams, past district governor and past president of the Rotary Club of Slatington, presented the Donald P. Jones Rotary Memorial Scholarship award to Allison Ehrich, who will be attending Northampton Community College this fall.

Allison will be majoring in graphic design. She is the daughter of Lynne and Danny Ehrich of Walnutport.

Alan M. Kush Rotary Scholarship Award

Ryan Van Norman, president of the Rotary Club of Slatington, recently presented the Alan M. Kush Rotary Memorial Scholarship award to Allen Sipos, who will be attending Penn State University, Lehigh Valley Campus this fall.

Allen will be majoring in elementary education. He is the son of Marcy and Bruce Sipos of Slatington.

The Rotary Club of Slatington meets at the Blue Ridge Country Club every Thursday at 6:15 p.m., except during July and August, where the meeting is held at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center.

Northern Lehigh graduation

The Northern Lehigh High School Class of 2013 will hold commencement exercises at 7 p.m. Friday at Northern Lehigh Bulldog Community Stadium.

Plaque unveiling

Northern Lehigh Future Focus will dedicate the Gateway Improvement Project on the North side of the Slatington Trailhead with a ceremony on Tuesday, June 4, beginning at 10 a.m. The dedication will be held rain or shine.

In addition, a memorial plaque honoring longtime future focus treasurer Les Glanz will be unveiled.

Slatington Trailhead dedication

A dedication of the Slatington Trailhead will be held on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Trailhead is located adjacent to the Main Street bridge that connects Slatington and Walnutport.

Slatington Lions Club

The Slatington Lions Club will meet at the Moose at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. There will be committee updates and open discussion.

Lions celebrating birthdays include Daniel Evans (May 16); Theodore Martinez (May 17); and Robin Distler (May 29).

Slatington 150th Anniversary Committee plans new history book

In 2014, the Borough of Slatington will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its incorporation. Plans are under way for a weeklong celebration in August of next year. To help commemorate the anniversary, the history committee of Slatington 150 is planning on printing a history book.

Clean Up Day

The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission will sponsor the second annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean Up Day on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 9 a.m.

The cleanup, held in conjunction with Earth Day, will help beautify public recreation areas in Slatington. Areas to be cleaned will be borough owned and operated recreation facilities in the Slatington and include the West End Playground, Victory Park, The Fish Pond, Slatington Trailhead, and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead continuing westward to the borough line.
