Food pantry slated

The Shepherd House Food Pantry at Ebenezer E.C. Church will be open on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9-11 a.m. Recipients must reside within the Jim Thorpe School District and fall within TEFAP income guidelines. The pantry is located at 441 Center Ave. in Jim Thorpe. Please park in the Cherry Avenue parking lot and enter through the rear entrance.

The Jim Thorpe Olympian Touchdown Booster Club will meet this evening at 6 p.m. in the commons area of the high school.

This is an organizational meeting and it is hoped as many parents and friends as possible can make it. There will be organizing of committees for the 2012 season.

Penn Forest Twp. transfer station

The Penn Forest Township Transfer Station will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

The new transfer station hours will start Jan. 2, 2012.

They are: Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday and Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Wednesday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

All transfer station/garbage fees should be paid by Jan. 6, 2012 to avoid the penalty fee.

The municipal building will be closed Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, the normal business hours for 2012 will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

The American Red Cross bloodmobile will be stationed at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Please give the gift of life and donate to this worthy cause. It will be at the hall from 1-6 p.m. and donors must be 17 years of age.

Christmas Eve service

St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, will hold its Christmas Eve Holy Communion service on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. There will be no church services or Sunday School on Christmas Day. Services will resume on New Year's Sunday, with 9:15 a.m. Sunday School and 10:30 a.m. service of lessons and carols.

The Diligent Fire Company will hold its annual Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 17, beginning at 1 p.m. The event is open to children of the community up to the age of 10.

Jim Thorpe Chamber members will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Crave At 66, formerly Albright Mansion, 66 Broadway, downtown Jim Thorpe. The agenda will include election of officers during a shortened meeting to allow the time to celebrate the successes of the year at a Christmas party.

JT offers free parking

Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko announced that there will be free parking from Dec. 25 to Jan. 2 at all regular parking meters in town. A two hour parking limit, however, will be enforced to allow residents and visitors access to downtown Jim Thorpe.

Fire company party

Members of the Phoenix Fire Company will hold their Christmas party on Friday, Dec. 9, at the company headquarters. The party will follow the 6 p.m. meeting of the members. Arlene will be accepting reservations until Dec. 3, by calling (570) 325-4251.

Mitten Tree

The Jim Thorpe Lioness will again be sponsoring a Mitten Tree in the Railroad Station during the Olde Time Christmas Festival. This is their 12th year collecting mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to be distributed to the community food banks and Head Start.

The members would like to thank those who participated in the past and hope you will continue to support the future endeavors. The festival will be held the first weekend in December.

The following dates are scheduled for the registration for children for the annual Toys for Tots campaign. Registration will be held at Salem Bible Fellowship Church, 1105 Fredericks Grove Road, Lehighton, on Nov. 18, 19, Dec. 2, 3, 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. To ensure that a family is eligible for the program there must be a letter from your church/clergy, proof of public assistance or proof of unemployment.
