Achievement awards

The Tamaqua Area School District will hold its annual Achievement Awards ceremony on May 11 in the Tamaqua Area Middle School Auditorium.

Doors to the auditorium will open at 5:15 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There is no admission fee.

Approximately $150,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to students.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 28 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville with 50 members in attendance.

South Ward news

The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet at 7 p.m. May 13 at the community center at the South Ward Playground on Penn Street.

The committee will be discussing reported problems and ways to improve the community.

Anyone with a concern or idea for improvement is welcome to attend.

Library book club

The Tamaqua Public Library's next monthly book discussion for adults will be at 6 p.m. May 18.

Historical society meeting

The Palmerton Area Historical Society will hold is monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Knight's Gallery of the Palmerton Library.

Carol O'Brien will be the featured speaker, talking about antiques and how to look for clues to help determine how old a piece is and its value. She will have examples to discuss.

Carol grew up in Lehighton but lived in Sacramento, California, for 40 years, where she appraised antiques both privately and for the American Cancer Society, which raised over $1 million.

Legion gatherings

The American Legion, Post 927, is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Post home in Gilbert.

The 927 Riders will meet at 10:30 a.m. Sunday while the Sons of the American Legion are scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

On Monday, the Auxiliary meets at 6 p.m.

The Korean War Vets meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

UMW meets

Effort United Methodist Women will meet for a mother/child banquet at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Lansford

St. John's

Tonight at 7, St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, will hold an informal worship: a spiritual, peaceful evening service with Holy Communion.

All are welcome to this relaxed, brief musical evening prayer.

Feed the People hosts a dinner from 5-6:30, followed by a brief adult Bible study at 6:30 for all who wish to participate.

Nesquehoning

Woman's club

The members of the Nesquehoning Woman's Club will entertain their guests from the Lehighton Women's Club and the Panther Valley Women's Club at the Spring Tea at 7 p.m. Monday in the Zion Lutheran Church in Nesquehoning.

Kathy Long of Lehighton will present a program on memorabilia from Hess's Department Store of Allentown. The executive board members will furnish the refreshments that evening. Reservations will be taken for the June dinner.

McCann scholarship

The Pottsville Campus of the McCann School of Business and Technology has extended the deadline for scholarship applications.

The new deadline for applications will be June 12. High school panel interviews will be held on June 20.

High School Class of 2015 graduates are eligible to apply.

There are several different scholarships available.

Trinity happenings

First Saturday worship with Holy Communion at Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., Lehighton, is at 5 p.m. The Rev. Michael Frost, pastor at Zion's Stone Church, New Ringgold, presides.

Sunday worship with Holy Communion begins at 9 a.m. Designated pastor the Rev. Nancy Moore presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

First Tuesday quiet communion is 10 a.m. May 5.

Food drive

The Lansford/Coaldale Post Office is having its annual food drive on May 9. People are asked to participate by having nonperishables by their mailbox on that day. The letter carrier will pick them up and bring them to the local food bank. Nonperishables will also be accepted in the lobbies of Lansford and Coaldale Post Offices through May 9.

Soup social

Monthly soup socials are being held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. The next outreach social will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The event is part of Trinity's monthly "Feeding the Hungry" program.

The public is welcome to attend and share in the free soup, friendship and God's love. Those attending are reminded to use the lower parking lot entrance into Founder's Hall.
