Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met June 23 with Judy Kellner, vice president, conducting the business meeting.

Guest speaker Howard Dry, a master gardener, presented information on the benefits of adding peppermint to your diet by way of candy tea or as a spice.

The herb can also be used medicinally. Simply rub peppermint on your forehead to relieve a headache.

Members discussed the Schuylkill County Fair, to be held July 27 to Aug. 1 in Summit Station. The final plans and arrangements were agreed upon.

Eldred supervisors

Eldred Township supervisors will meet at 7:30 tonight at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

Legion meets

The West End American Legion is slated to meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Post home in Gilbert.

The West End Home Association has its meeting on the calendar for 7:30 tonight.

Center closed

The Chestnuthill Senior center will be closed this Friday. The menu for next week Wednesday and Friday is Swiss steak on July 8 and grilled chicken Cobb salad on July 10.

Adult Day Care

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center will be celebrating Independence Day with a rocket craft on July 3.

Other activities for this month include: July 15, Salvation Army service; July 17, sing-along with Audrey Christ; July 20, painting class; July 22, scrapbooking; July 24, Christmas in July; July 29, special bingo.

The center also offers exercise sessions, a variety of therapies and social games. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are served daily.

Band practice

Panther Valley High School band will have summer practice on July 7 and July 21 in the high school band room from 7-8 p.m.

Band camp will be Aug. 6-18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school.

Lansford

St. John's

Tonight at 7, St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, will hold an informal worship: a spiritual, peaceful evening service with Holy Communion.

All are welcome to this relaxed, brief, musical, evening prayer.

The Slatington 150 History Committee announces that an index of proper names is now available to the public as a companion to the book "Slatington at 150 Years: More Stories to Share."

Due to time constraints and extenuating circumstances, an index was not included in the original publication.

Through the generosity of a descendant of original area settler Ambrose Remaley, Jim Ramaly (different surname spelling) of Gettysburg, generously donated his time and expertise and created an index of proper names found in the book.

Concert in the Park

On Sunday, the Palmerton Band will present a concert in the Palmerton Borough Park Bandstand beginning at 7 p.m. This concert is sponsored by The Concourse Club of Palmerton.

There is no rain date for any concert. In case of inclement weather the Bandstand Committee reserves the right to cancel the concert. Please bring your own lawn chair.

On July 12, the concert will be by the Lehigh Valley Italian American Band.

Al-Anon Family Groups meet at different locations in the Palmerton Area.
