Farewell

The congregation of Effort United Methodist bade an emotional farewell to Pastor Dave Felker and his wife Ruth this past Sunday.

The new pastor will be in the pulpit Sunday, July 4.

Services for the coming weekend will be at 5 p.m., Saturday, June 26, led by Ken Edwards, and Sunday, at 8:30 and at 11 a.m., led by retired pastor Bob Argot.

Gardening help

Penn State Master Gardeners hosts a gardening helpline, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday through Sept. 29, as well as conducting workshop sessions to help area residents.

The Panther Valley High School graduates who purchased graduation handshake photos from Flexer Photo Studios can pick them up in the high school office between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Coaldale's recycling schedule will change as of Tuesday, July 6. All recycling will be picked up by Tamaqua Transfer. The pickup will be every two weeks on a Tuesday; the entire town will be done on that day.

Pickup dates for July are July 6 and July 20.

All recycling must be placed at the curb the night before pickup. The borough will no longer have a drop-off area.

Free movie nights will be held at the East End Playground in Tamaqua. Movie nights begin today, June 21, at 8:30 p.m. The first movie will be "Toy Story."

The film "Up" will be presented on July 5.

Also at the playground, the Cressona Band will perform a free concert on July 14, beginning at 7 p.m.

Summit Hill

Methodist Charge

The schedule for the Summit Hill/Coaldale United Methodist Charge for Sunday, June 20, is as follows:

Worship services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Summit Hill United Methodist Church and at 11 a.m. in the Coaldale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Burgess Gordon, pastor, will officiate at both services.

The adult Sunday school will meet at 10 a.m. in the Coaldale church.

Panther Valley

Band boosters

The Panther Valley Band Boosters will meet on Thursday, June 24, at 7 p.m. in the high school band room.

Summer lunch

The South Ward Playground Association is conducting a free summer lunch program for all local children up to and including the age of 18. Lunches are served weekdays, from noon to 1 p.m., at the South Ward Playground.

The program is an off shoot of the free school lunch program, with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The non-discriminatory program is open to all children regardless of race, origin, religion, etc. In addition to a healthy lunch, participants will be offered a variety of summer activities.

Vacation Bible School

Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church SSP will hold its VBS from June 27 until July 1, Sunday after worship and Monday through Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Ages are 4 years of age through the sixth grade. There will also be an adult class.
