Crystal Bauer, daughter of Shawn and Annamarie Bauer of Kunkletown, was honored Sunday at Effort United Methodist by The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, Office of Loans and Scholarship, with a certificate of recognition for her academic pursuits, leadership ability, Christian character and active membership in the United Methodist Church.

That recognition was presented to Crystal by Pastor Robin Fisher. She is currently a student at Messiah College.

Advent Noontime Services will again be held in Tamaqua leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The annual community events are held at different locations each week. This years's schedule will include: Dec. 1, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine and Mauch Chunk Streets; Dec. 8, St John United Church of Christ, Pine and Biddle Streets; Dec. 15, New Life Assembly of God, Schuylkill Avenue.

The public is welcome to attend. a light luncheon will be served following each noontime service.

Weekly street sweeping operations in the Borough of Tamaqua have been discontinued for the Winter months. Street sweeping will resume in the Spring of 2011, with schedules to be advertised in the TIMES NEWS.

ESRC basketball

The Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission is seeking volunteer coaches and referees for its Biddy Basketball Program for students in third through sixth grade. There will be two separate divisions, 3-4 grade and 5-6 grade. The program is scheduled to begin the second week in December and continue through February.

The league is designed to help children develop and sharpen their basketball skills, increasing their interest in the game. Games and practices will be held at the Tamaqua Elementary School and the West Penn Elementary School.

Palmerton Area Historical Society

The Palmerton Area Historical Society will present its annual ecumenical Christmas service in the Little White Church at Third and Columbia Avenue, Palmerton, starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5.

All are invited to attend this opportunity for getting the holiday season off to a good start.

Traditional carols will be sung accompanied by Carol Thomas on the old pump organ. Pastor Jody Neifert will deliver the message. Society members, Peter Kern and John Aulenbach, will present readings in keeping with the season.

St. Matthew's Homecoming

Everyone is invited to St. Matthew's Homecoming to be held during its 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Nov. 28, whether you are a member or not. During that time, there will be special hymns, a special message as they welcome the Advent season. Everyone can help decorate the Christmas tree with special ornaments. Immediately following the service there will be a brunch served.

Eldred supervisors

The next public meeting of the Eldred Township Supervisors will be on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the municipal building.

Woman's Club of Slatington

The Woman's Club of Slatington recently hosted a speaker on Pachacuti Fair Trade and gifts. The proceeds collected from the sale of these items goes back to the third world countries were the items were made. This topic gave members a chance to start some early holiday shopping and help out the club's International Affairs department.

Benefit volleyball game at PVMS

Panther Valley School District will be doing a volleyball student vs. faculty tournament this year on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m.. at the Panther Valley Middle school.

The school is involving the students this year, especially since Cody Cinicola is currently battling cancer and is going through treatments right now at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

The doors will open at 5 p.m. with the kitchen being open with many foods available (haluski, turkey bbq, beef bbq) just to name a few.

The Tamaqua Salvation Army is offering local residents the opportunity to share in the joys of Thanksgiving through a free Thanksgiving Day meal. Turkey and all the trimmings will be served tomorrow, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the SAL Center, 115 W. Broad St. Delivery options are available for the disabled and the elderly.

Christmas Tree Lighting

The 2010 Community Christmas Tree Lighting and Sing-a-long will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 7 p.m. at the Polk Township Veterans Memorial, located on Route 209 in Kresgeville. Santa will make an appearance and there will be refreshments. Rain Date is Sunday, Nov. 28.
