Senior boxes

The Senior Boxes will be distributed at the Methodist Church on Friday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Free dinner

The next free community dinner will be on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 5-7 p.m. at the Methodist Church.

Summit Hill

St. Paul Lutheran

A Service of Healing will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, during the 10:30 a.m. worship service at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Summit Hill.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the church.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 72 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings. One new member, Mae McKeever, was welcomed.

Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Someone There." Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld and vice president Doris Brobst. Cards were received from Jean Machamer and the family of Tom Dally. The membership total has reached 117.

Missionary visitors

Kurt and Cynthia Zimmerman, career missionaries with World Gospel Mission, will be visiting Effort United Methodist Church Sept. 18-19.

Serving in Bolivia, the Zimmermans will speak and show slides at the 5 p.m. service Saturday evening and at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services on Sunday. Community residents are invited to attend any of the services.

While in Bolivia, Kurt Zimmerman has taught fifth and sixth grades and coached baseball and basketball. He serves as a youth leader, counselor, and music ministry team leader at Cristo Viene Church.

Slovak cemetery

A meeting of the Protestant Slovak Cemetery Association of Nesquehoning will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church.

75th anniversary

St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Nesquehoning will celebrate is 75th anniversary with a service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 at the church followed by a dinner at Penn's Peak.

Special visit

The Western Pocono Lions Club will welcome its own member as speaker at this week's meeting, Bob Kelsey, currently the District Governor of District 14U.

Kelsey will detail his plans for the district and discuss the 2010 International Lions Convention held in Australia this past summer.

The club will meet at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 15, at The Hamilton in Saylorsburg.

The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for September, including the monthly birthday celebration on Sept. 16.

Other activities for the month will include: Sept. 15, craft day; Sept. 20, show and tell; Sept. 21, musical entertainment with Audrey Christ; Sept. 22, make a fall hat; Sept. 24, cooking class; and Sept. 30, movie day.

Come join St. Matthew's UCC in celebration of Harvest Home on Sunday, Sept. 19 at the 9 a.m. worship service.

You can bring any produce for display purposes. Nonperishable food items may be brought to be donated to Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network's food distribution.

A special blessing will be given to the givers.

As part of the Palmerton Area Historical Society's 20th birthday celebration, the September event will be an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 19, at the society's archives in the Palmerton Borough Hall. There will be a power point program, tour of the facilities and light refreshment. Many people are not aware of the existence of this site. Take this opportunity to learn all about the steps through which a donation goes once it enters in the society's care.

Coaldale Lions meetings

The Coaldale Lions Club will resume its indoor meeting schedule this month.

The first meeting of the group will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and the second meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Both meetings will take place at the Viennese Villa in Coaldale and start at 5:45 p.m. President Robert E. Ames will preside.
