Summit Hill

Remembering Sister

Sr. Mary Florence Hawe, former teacher, principal and pastoral assistant for the Summit Hill Catholic community, is a guest at the Sisters of Mercy Convent. Christmas wishes can be sent to her at 560 Hemlock Road, Merion, Pa. 19066.

Christmas party

American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, will hold its annual Christmas party for all children from the community on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 1-3 p.m. at the post home.

A little thing like a construction site is not going to stop the South Ward Playground Association from holding its annual Christmas party and visit from St. Nick. The event will just be held this Sunday, a little further south and west of the playground, in the Tamaqua Senior High School Cafeteria. Hours will be from 1-3 p.m.

In addition to a visit from St. Nick, there will be free face painting and a free bike give away.

Anyone planning to attend is reminded to use the rear doors to the cafeteria, NOT the front doors of the school.

A benefit dance will be held at the Panther Valley High School on Friday, Dec. 17, starting at 7 p.m. The proceeds will benefit an ailing student.

A DJ will be donating his time for the evening. The dance is sponsored by the student council.

Food drive

The Panther Valley Breaker Boys football team will hold a food drive on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 15 W. Ridge St., Lansford.

They are asking the community to donate canned goods and nonperishable food items during the aforementioned times.

The items will be delivered to Lansford's Food Pantry and the food pantry at St. Katherine Drexel's Church.

The pantries will distribute food to families in need.

Food drive

The Panther Valley Breaker Boys football team will hold a food drive on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 15 W. Ridge St., Lansford.

They are asking the community to donate canned goods and nonperishable food items during the aforementioned times. The items will be delivered to Lansford's Food Pantry. The pantry will then distribute the food to families in need during the Christmas holiday.

Board of Health

The December meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Randy Gormley, Shirley Becker and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.

Barron reported making a general inspection at the City Limits Cafe and Bakery. He also received and adjusted nine complaints: three concerning trash/rubbish; three infestations; two properties unfit for human occupancy; and one for no heat/hot water. There were no cases of reportable diseases for November.

LANSFORD

Trinity Lutheran Church

The Trinity Lutheran Church of Lansford will hold a Christmas program during the worship service on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 9:30 a.m. There will be readings by members of the congregation as well as solos by church musician Susan Featro.

This will be followed by refreshments in the Sunday School rooms.

On Friday, Dec. 24, the Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion service will beheld at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend these services.

Sounds of the Season

This weekend marked the annual holiday production of the Pleasant Valley Choral Society in the Pleasant Valley High School auditorium.

The group of over 30 voices, under the direction of Dorothy Mohr, remembered deceased member George W. Prosser Jr. of Appenzell as they dedicated the program to him. They were accompanied by Tom Salmon and junior accompanist, Amanda Breidenbach.

Chorus concert

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School's fifth grade will have its chorus concert on Monday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All are welcome to attend.

Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church

SSP will be hanging the greens for Christmas on Saturday, Dec 18 at 12:30 p.m.

If you would like to decorate the church for Christmas, bring a dish for the potluck dinner which will be held at noon in the church's dining room downstairs.
