Senior news

The Jan. 20 meeting of the Tamaqua Senior Citizens was attended by 65 members. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session, offered the invocation, entitled "Night of Love," and offered an inspirational reading. One new member, Linda Davenport, was welcomed.

Guest speaker Judy Hoppes offered information concerning cancer and ways the American Cancer Society can assist patients and their families.

Tax help begins

The West End AARP Tax Assistance Group from Lehighton has begun its work in the West End today, weather permitting at Salem UCC in Gilbert. Offered is free tax help for all ages, with special attention to seniors.

Federal, state and local taxes, as well as rent and property rebates will be completed.

Volunteers are there Monday and Thursday mornings, from 9 a.m. to noon.

If Pleasant Valley schools have a two-hour delay, the hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to noon.

Singing Valentines

Don't know what to get your Valentine this year? Call St. Matthew's UCC to order your Singing Valentines for Saturday, Feb. 12.

St. Matthew's choir will either sing a special Valentine's song over the phone or come to your Valentine's door and sing in person and present a gift.

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Jan. 19 at the home of Mary Machay. The program for the evening was a presentation by Molly Pavia and Sandra deLay about massage and reflexology.

Scripture sharing

The weekly scripture sharing sessions sponsored by St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, will be held tonight at 7 o'clock in the parish rectory.

Anthracite LL

The Anthracite Little League (Summit Hill/Nesquehoning) will hold registration sessions at both the Summit Hill and Nesquehoning borough buildings on the following dates: Saturdays, Feb. 12 and 19 and March 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The league will hold a reorganizational meeting tonight at 7 o'clock in the Nesquehoning Borough Building.

Conservation club

The Nesquehoning Conservation Club will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 6:30 p.m. at Maple Shade Meadows.

Plans for the upcoming spring fishing derby will start at this time.

If any member has any ideas or suggestions, please attend this meeting or contact any officer. The 2011 dues are also being accepted.

Family Fun Night

Polk Elementary will have a family fun night on Friday, Jan. 27 from 6-8 p.m. in the school gym. All students of Polk and their families are welcome to attend.

Tax exemptions

The Tamaqua Area School District is accepting Assessed Occupation Tax exemption applications for the 2011-20112 school year. This will cover the 2011 calendar year. This year's forms are blue.

Retired persons and housewives with no earned income, who have previously been exempted, do not need to file again unless their status has changed and they are now earning income. Also, those who are disabled or at least 75 years of age, who have been specifically notified of their exemption by the district, need not file an application.
