Smoke detectors

The Jim Thorpe Fire Department has free smoke detectors for Jim Thorpe borough residents. If you need a smoke detector please contact Fire Chief Bill Diehm at (570) 325-3890. No commercial properties please.

Bereavement group

The bereavement support group of St. Joseph's parish will meet on Saturday, at 11 a.m. These weekly sessions will continue until March 5. The sessions take place in the rectory of the church and are open to anyone. If you wish more information call the rectory office, (570) 325-3731.

JROTC meeting

A Panther Valley JROTC meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the JROTC classroom at the high school.


Zion Lutheran

Morning worship will begin at Zion Lutheran Church in Nesquehoning at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 13. The sermon title this week is "To Preserve, Protect and to Prophesy."

Visitors are always welcome.

There will be a special congregational meeting immediately following the service on Sunday.

The Panther Valley Public Library has some sweet ideas for Valentine's Day.

On Monday, Feb 14, children ages 3-9 are welcome to attend a Valentine's Day story time with Miss Debi. The story time will include Valentine's books, making crafts and having snacks from 4-6 p.m.

On Valentine's Day, the library will be having a one day only sale on paperback love stories. Come in from 3:30-7:30 p.m. and buy a bag for your sweetheart. The library also has an array of antique Valentines on display throughout February.

Historical society

The Eldred Township Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Eldred Township municipal building. They will be having a Show and Tell. You're invited to bring in an item that you think is interesting or has a history in your family.

St. Matthew's UCC

Everyone who is planning to attend St. Matthew's on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. is asked to wear red in celebration of St. Valentine's Day and love.

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization met Jan. 10 in the school library with 20 members in attendance.

Topics included a dance for students in grades three through five, which will be held today, from 7-9 p.m., in the school gym. Cell phones are not permitted.

Due to the number of snow days this year, classes will be in session on President's Day, Feb. 21. Jay Smarr will present a program at the Rush Elementary School Feb. 22 and at the Tamaqua Elementary School Feb. 23. A Choral Concert will be at the Tamaqua Middle School at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23.

The Palmerton Memorial VFW Post 7134 will hold its monthly meeting at the Palmerton VFW, 2020 Forest Inn Rd., Palmerton on Monday, February 14th at 7 p.m. Post Commander Shawn Schmick will lead the meeting. Current VFW members, veterans, and active duty personnel from all service branches are invited to attend. Monthly meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. New members are welcome.

The Lansford Food Pantry will be held on Monday, Feb. 21 from 9:30-11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 104East Abbott St., Lansford. The food pantry is held on the third Monday of each month and serves the residents of Lansford who meet the income guidelines.

The food pantry is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers of the community. Food items are purchased by state and federal funding and from donations from the local businesses and residents, which have been decreasing over the past few years.

Dog licenses

Schuylkill County Treasurer Jackie McGovern reminds residents that 2011 dog licenses are now available. Dogs 3 months of age or older must be licensed.

Licenses may be obtained at the county courthouse in Pottsville, by mail or at a variety of licensing agents. Locally, those agents include AAA at 202 E. Broad St.; Tom's Auto and Marine, Greenwood Street and Mountain Avenue; and Koch's Farm Service in the Lewistown Valley.
