Family Fun Night

Pleasant Valley Elementary will have a family fun night on Friday, Feb. 18 from 6-7:30 p.m in the school cafeteria. All students of PVE and their families are welcome to attend.

Polk PTO Meeting

Polk Elementary School will have a PTO Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. Parents of Polk students are invited to come and share their ideas. Baby sitting is available.

PV Elementary School PTO

The monthly PVE PTO meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All are welcome to attend.

Summit Hill

Lions Club

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Lions Club will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. Since February is Heart Health Month, the program will be on "Chest Pain Awareness."

Members planning to attend should contact club president Dr. Kenneth Vermillion before Friday, Feb. 18.

St. Paul Lutheran

The schedule for St. Paul Lutheran Church for Sunday, Feb. 20, is as follows: Sunday school 9 a.m., and service of worship, 10:30 a.m. The Rev. John Hazel, pastor, will preside.

Writers conference

The Black Diamond Writers Network will conduct the region's second Write It Right writers' conference on April 16, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Genetti's Best Western Inn, Hazleton.

Keynote speaker will be Maria V. Snyder, a New York Times best selling author. She will share tips on the "path to publication."

Day-long events will include workshops on writing-related topics as well as an author book fair.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Last week's meeting was attended by 72 members. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and offered the invocation, entitled "Watching."

Vice President Doris Roberts and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their respective reports.

Slatington Trailhead and D&L Trail update

At a recent meeting of the Venture Group, special guest Scott Everett from the D&L Corridor Commission displayed pictures of the trail construction southbound from Slatington to Treichlers.

By the end of summer, a 15-mile section running southbound from Bowmanstown should be complete.

Scout Sunday

Scouts were present at the 10:30 a.m. service at Effort UMC. The church hosts Pack, Troop and Crew 99.

At St. Peter's UMC in Saylorsburg, Troop 109 was scheduled to participate in the service.

Some churches celebrated Scout Sunday on Feb. 6.

Zion Seniors

The next meeting of the Zion Senior Citizens is set for 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 17. Part of the meeting will be focus on Valentine's Day and its history.

Summit Hill

SHHS to meet

The Summit Hill Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting tonight at 7 o'clock in the museum on Ludlow Street. Lee Mantz, president, will be in charge of the session.

The agenda will include correspondence from William Roulette First Lady Cleveland's Parasol visit; and Michael Gallagher 1935 Boy Scouts.

Discussions will include topics of tinting for the museum windows, the society's newsletter, license plates and various fundraisers.

Future meetings of the society will take place on March 16, April 20 and May 18.

Class reunion planning

A meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Terpestras (Gerbers), for anyone who graduated in the following classes from Jim Thorpe High School: 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be the planning stage for the joint class reunion. Everyone for the aforementioned classes is invited to attend and help in the planning.

Special Story Time for children

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. there will be a special Story Time at Dimmick Memorial Library in Jim Thorpe.
