Writers' group

The Black Diamond Writers' Network will meet July 17, from 10 a.m.- noon, at the Tamaqua Public Library, 30 S. Railroad St. Guest speaker will be Anne Supsic, a professional travel writer and world traveler. She will offer tips on finding story ideas, formatting articles and finding a publisher.

The spotlight speaker for this month will be Patricia Shenyo of Drums.

The public is welcome to attend.

The BDWN is a nonprofit organization offering writing education and networking opportunities. The group meets the third Saturday of every month.

Summit Hill

Borough council

The Summit Hill Borough Council will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 13, at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Joseph Weber, president, will be in charge of the session.

Scripture sharing

The weekly scripture sharing sessions at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, will be held on Thursday, July 8, at 7 p.m. The sessions are held in the parish rectory.

School reunion

A general reunion is being planned for students who attended the former Breiner's Number 2 School in the Lewistown Valley. The event will be held Aug. 14, at the school, located on Valley Road.

Deadline for reservations will be July 30.

Trash collection

There will be no changes in next week's trash collection schedule for residents of Tamaqua and Hometown. All routes will be collected on their regular days.

The office of Terry McElmoyle, Jim Thorpe tax collector, will be closed Saturday, July 3, and Monday, July 5. It will reopen Tuesday, July 6.

Fireworks

The Nesquehoning police and mayor will be enforcing the fireworks code in the borough on July 4. They will be driving around with extra police on to make sure the community of Nesquehoning remains safe from illegal fire works.

Anyone not obeying the law will be fined.

Coaldale

Office closed

The Coaldale borough administrative office will be closed Monday, July 5, in observance of the July 4 holiday. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday.

Any one interested in establishing a Crime Watch organization in Rush Township is welcome to attend a meeting Wednesday, July 7. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the township municipal building.

The Sixth Annual Lehighton Area High School All Alumni Family Day will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at the new Orioles Park. Music will be provided by Monroe Berger. Everyone who has ever attended classes in the Lehighton Area School District and their family are invited to attend.

The annual congregational picnic of Zion Lutheran Church in Tamaqua is scheduled for Sunday, July 18 at the Bugalow Park Pavilion in Tamaqua.

An outdoor service begins at 10:30 a.m. The picnic follows the service.

Members of the congregation, their friends and neighbors are invited.

A sign up sheet is posted in the church's gathering room.

Members can also call the church office at (570) 668-2180 and tell how many family members are coming and what picnic item the family will bring.

Members are urged to sign up by July 14.

PV Knee Hi

The next regular monthly meeting of the Panther Valley Knee-Hi will be held on Tuesday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at The Sports Zoo in Lansford. This is the last meeting prior to the first practice on July 26.

Methodist Church

A joint meeting of the Administrative Council and the Trustees of the Summit Hill United Methodist Church will be held on Tuesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. in the church.

Meeting canceled

Due to the Fourth of July holiday, the monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization has been canceled.

Church honors graduates

On June 27, Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church honored 2010 graduates during the 9:30 a.m. worship service.

Whitney Harding graduated from West Chester University on May 8.

Deanna Detweiler, John Ginder, Matthew Green, Alison Harding, Christian Harding, Evan Makuvek and Kelsey McGarvey graduated from Pleasant Valley High School on June 11.
