Future PASR president

Former Pleasant Valley High School principal Frederick Hackett, Brodheadsville, is the president-elect of the Monroe Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) for the 2011-2012 program year. Currently he is serving as program chair.

Two funerals

Effort UMC was the site for two funerals this past Friday. The first was for the Rev. Jack Rule, who served many area churches, including McMichaels and Effort UMC as well as Parryville UMC in Carbon County and Richmond UMC in Northampton County.

Walk for life

Care Net of Tamaqua, an organization providing services to pregnant women, plans to open an office in town at 223 E. Broad St.

The center will provide life-affirming guidance, counseling, prenatal classes, parenting classes and much more to area women and families.

Jim Thorpe Community Watch group sets walk

The Jim Thorpe Community Watch group will hold its first monthly community walk on March 31. Anyone who would like to participate should meet at Memorial Park at 6:30 p.m.

The group is hoping that many residents will join the walk to show the community's presence and its support for positive changes in the borough.

If you cannot attend, please turn on your porch light to support the program.

The walk will be held rain or shine.

Lenten Soup Supper and Scripture Service

"Toward a More Biblical Faith" will be the topic at this week's Lenten soup supper and scripture service.

It is hosted by St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, and will begin at 6 p.m.

All are welcome to attend and participate. This is part of this year's theme, "Who's knocking at your front door?"

St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Race Street, will be hosting its monthly "free community supper" on Sunday, March 27, from 4-6 p.m. The menu this month is roast beef.Parents meeting

Parents of students in the class of 2011 Jim Thorpe High School are going to meet on Monday, March 28, at 7 p.m. in the commons area of the high school. Plans for the All Night party will be furthered at this time. Parents are reminded that their child's dues for the party is now payable.

There will be choir practice for choir members of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Nesquehoning on Tuesday, March 29 at 1 p.m. Please attend.


First Congregational Church

Morning Worship will be held at First Congregational Church at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 25, followed by Sunday School for all ages at 10 a.m. Confirmation Class will be conducted at 12:30 p.m.

Lenten services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, followed by choir rehearsal.

Lenten service

The next Lenten service will be on Wednesday, March 30 at St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown.

The guest preacher will be the Rev. Michael Eckroth.

Soup and sandwiches will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

St. Matthew's will provide the soup and beverages.

Bring your own sandwich.

The service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

4-H meeting held

Mahoning Valley 4-H Community Club held an organizational meeting on March 21. The following officers were elected: Riley Schaeffer, president; Elyse Kistler, vice president; Jackie Malloy, secretary; Brianna Keiser, treasurer; Nolan Wentz, reporter; Erin McGinley, historian; and Katie Aaron and Jack Schaeffer, social committee.

New members are welcome to attend the next meeting at 7 p.m. April 4 at St. John's Church, 826 Mahoning Drive West, Lehighton. At this meeting members will sign up for projects.

Sorority news

Members of the local Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met in the conference room of the offices of International Paper in Hazleton. Participants were treated to a light lunch and were presented with goodie bags. Patti Burke served as hostess and presented a program about St. Patrick's Day.

An election of officers was held and the slate will be: Lori Schmerfeld, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Donna Sterling, recording secretary; Pat Kibbler, corresponding secretary; and Marie Umbriac, treasurer.

Weissport Recreation Committee will host the Weissport Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16 in the borough park. Children and grandchildren of Weissport residents ages 0 to 12 are welcome. Prizes will be awarded to winners.
