Maundy Thursday events

Effort United Methodist Church will hold Holy Thursday's Soup & Bread in Wesley Hall at 6 p.m. and the Living Last Supper Service at 7:30 p.m.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will offer Holy Thursday morning prayer at 8 a.m., but no Mass at 8 a.m.; a 7 p.m. Mass of the Lord's Supper, and an 11 p.m. Night Prayer.

Health scan

Nesquehoning Woman's Club will sponsor the OMEGA Health Screen performed by Quest Diagnostics from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 196 West Mill St., on the basement level. There is a handicapped entrance to the rear. There is a fee.

Meed's Methodist Church

Meed's Shepherd House will take place from 1-3:30 p.m. Thursday at the church at 126 W. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning. Anyone in need from Nesquehoning, New Columbus or Hauto is welcome.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met April 10 with 57 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and Jacque Patrick provided the invocation "Little Way to Calvary."

Nora Shiedy was added to the sick list. Reports were offered by secretary Ruth Ann Feane and treasurer Penny Schlorf. Dues for 2014 are still being accepted.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

Cemetery cleanup

St. Matthew's UCC asks if anyone wants to keep items placed on cemetery plots to please remove them by early Saturday morning. There will be a cemetery cleanup April 12 and all items left on the grave sites will be removed.

Holy Week events

St. Matthew's UCC will observe Palm Sunday, Sunday, April 13. The traditional worship service will be at 9 a.m. Sunday School, for all ages, is at 10:30 a.m.

Garden club news

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its first meeting of the season on March 25 in the social hall of Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Kathy McGee presided over the business meeting.

The club received a thank you card from CareNet. A card shower is being planned for Evelyn Berger, who will celebrate her 90th birthday on April 19. Members discussed traveling to Ott's in September or October to view the mums. Cindy Sabol provided a program on making maple syrup.

Lutheran Church

Following are upcoming events and activities for St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 123 W. White St., Summit Hill:

On Sunday, April 13, Palm Sunday worship service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with Vicar David Lembo presiding. Visitors are always welcome. Sunday school class will begin at 9 a.m.

Easter flower orders are due on this date also.

The Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7 p.m. April 17.

The Good Friday service will begin at noon on April 18.

Panther Valley

Golden Agers

The Panther Valley Golden Agers will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, April 14 at St. John's Lutheran Church Social Hall.

Hospitality for April and May is Polly Evon and Lorraine Klepinnger.

Members are asked to bring in greeting cards for the military. Bingo is scheduled to be played.

Members are reminded that dues are now being collected.

Anyone 55 and older are encouraged to join the group.

Board of Health

The April meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health took place at the Tamaqua Municipal Building with Randolph Gormley, Earl Boettger, James Gormley, Shirley Becker, health officer Judith Hadesty R.N and health enforcement officer Mitch Geist in attendance.

Geist reportedly received and adjusted 25 complaints in March: one leaking sewer; 17 buildings condemned as unfit for human habitation; two animal waste; and five for trash.

There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.

Trinity happenings

Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St. in Lehighton will hold Palm Sunday worship with distribution of palm fronds and a procession at 9 a.m. Interim pastor, the Rev. Guy R. Grube, will preside. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Sunday School classes meet for students ages 3 through grade 12 at 10:30 a.m. in the parish hall. Students and staff receive palm fronds and parade around the block (weather permitting).

10th Annual Boyer Bowl

The 10th Annual Boyer Bowl will be held on Saturday, April 19, at the Slatington Bowling Center in Slatington.

Session one is from 5-8 p.m. Session two is from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Bowling for a Cause benefits the Asher F. Boyer Endowment Fund for Future Education.

Anyone who would like to sign up may do so at the Northern Lehigh High School and/or Northern Lehigh Middle School main offices, at Boyer's Hardware Store in Slatington, or by emailing Chris Craig.
