Nesquehoning

Historical society

The Nesquehoning Historical Society will host its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafe of MapleShade Meadows, 50 E. Locust St.

The evening will include a special presentation on the founding of Pennsylvania by Joseph Roman Jr., an adjunct professor of history at Lehigh Carbon Community College and a Nesquehoning resident. He will talk about the impact that William Penn's Quaker beliefs had on his proposals for structure of the colonial government.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company.

Bring a bag lunch. They will have a speaker from the Vision Loss Center and play bingo.

Harvest Home

Sunday is Harvest Home at St. Matthew's UCC. There will be a special celebration at the 9 a.m. worship service.

Pink light walk

Tamaqua's Second Annual Pink Light Walk will be held on Oct. 4 and will follow the same walking route as the 2013 event. The walk is being held to help raise awareness of breast cancer and is being coordinated by Rachael Paisley, ambassador to Girl Scout Troop 31211.

Walkers will begin at the Bungalow Park Pavilion at 5 p.m., then proceed to Broad Street, ending at Depot Square Park. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. that day. The event will be held rain or shine.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 9 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville. New member Mary Ann Laughlin was welcomed.

The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld. Reports were offered by treasurer Shirley Becker and secretary Ruth Ann Feane.

Birthday greetings were offered to Rose Vallee, Marlene Randig, Jane Tartar and Robert Neifert. Anniversary wishes were extended to Cindy Godanis. Members discussed a trip to the Bloomsburg Fair on Monday.

Sunday worship with Rev. Jeff Stansbury, pastor, at 10:45 a.m.

Sunday school will be at 9:30 a.m. Classes are for all ages, including adult Bible study class.

Bible study Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Blockers. Ladies Bible study 10 a.m. Tuesday. Prayer meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Choir rehearsal 7 p.m. Thursday.

Rally Day and Harvest Home Sunday will be 10 a.m. Oct. 12.

Nesquehoning

Protestant Slovak Cemetery Association

The next meeting of the Protestant Slovak Cemetery Association of Nesquehoning will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church in Nesquehoning.

Anyone who has an interest in the cemetery is invited to come to this meeting to help with the maintenance of the cemetery, especially those who have relatives buried there.

Altar & Rosary

The Altar & Rosary Society of Our Lady Queen of Peace will meet in McCawley Hall at 6:30 p.m. today. Women of the parish are welcome to join the group.

Zion's Seniors

The Senior Citizen's Group at Zion Lutheran will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday. This group is for anyone age 50 and older.

Participants are reminded to bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided.

Summit Hill

Flag program

The Summit Hill Lions Club is continues its American flag program. During the good weather months, the flag will fly in Ludlow Park in memory or honor of veterans from the community.

During the week of Sept. 15, the flag will fly in honor of John Keltz.

A 1941 graduate of Summit Hill High School, he enlisted in the Navy upon graduation and served through 1945, having attained the rank of AMM first class while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in the South Pacific during World War II.

Alumni band

The Tamaqua Area High School Alumni Band will hold its annual gathering on Sept. 26 at the TAHS Homecoming game, when the Blue Raiders take on the Panther Valley Panthers. Former members of the TAHS Raider Band are welcome to join in for a fun night of music and memories.

St. Matthew's UCC

St. Matthew's UCC will have two worship services on Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Suzanne Brooks-Cope, pastor.

This Sunday, the regular worship service is at 9 a.m. and will be held in the picnic grove (weather permitting) with the members of the youth Camp Grove leading the worship service.

Sunday School for all ages is at 10:30 a.m.

Then at noon it is The Family Table. This relaxed casual service features Randy Cramer and The Path band and singers and country music. Dress is casual. Communion will be served.
