Bible study

The Rev. Suzanne Brooks-Cope at St. Matthew's UCC will be starting a Bible study class on "Discovering the Bible" on Sept. 17. If interested, contact the church office so books can be ordered, 610-381-2442.

PVEN needs

Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is in need of school supplies, school clothes (especially uniforms), new socks (adult size) and new packaged underwear for boys and girls, all sizes.

They also need macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, cereal and all nonperishable food items.

Healthy adults

Diakon Community Services will offer a free "Healthy Steps for Older Adults" Program for Tamaqua area residents. The two-part program is being offered to residents age 50 and older and will be held Sept. 25 and Oct. 1 at the Majestic House Apartment Complex, 201 E. Broad St.

Preschool story hour

The Panther Valley Public Library, 117 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, will once again hold a free, preschool story hour from 9:30-10:30 a.m. every Tuesday beginning Sept. 9.

Stories, snacks and activities are provided for the children.


Conservation Club

The next meeting of the Nesquehoning Conservation Club will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Shade Meadows.

Members are asked to bring in their Redners Save-a-tapes from the summer months.

Progress at the Nature Park will be discussed.

Trinity happenings

Sunday worship at Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. 3rd St., begins at 9 a.m., and includes blessing of the assembled prayer shawls and a Service of Healing.

The Service of Healing with prayers and the "laying on of hands" is said for those with emotional, physical or spiritual burdens to help one's loads become lightened.

Guest pastor, the Rev. Robert Mitchell, presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Free community dinner

Meed's UMC, 126 W. Catawissa St. in Nesquehoning will host a free community dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The menu is spaghetti with meat sauce. All are welcome to enjoy food and fellowship.

Free backpack

The Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, just off Weir Lake Road, will hold a free back-to-school event from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6. The first 100 children will get a free backpack filled with school supplies.

Garden of Giving

The Garden of Giving in McMichaels is producing a bounty of crops, including fresh organic garlic, onions, cucumbers, green and fryer peppers, eggplant, parsley, basil, and also eggs. The fall crop will be ready for harvesting at the end of September through the fall.

The Tamaqua Community Volunteers monthly giveaway will be held Saturday at the M and M Self Storage center, next to Schickram's Car Wash on Rose Street.

Anyone wishing to donate items should have them at the facility between 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday. Donations of clothing, toys, tools, electronics, holiday decorations, pots/pans/dishes, cookware, furniture, appliances and practically anything else are welcome.

The Palmerton Area Historical Society will hold its regular monthly general meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Knight's Gallery of the Palmerton Library.

A brief business meeting will be followed by the program. Jeff Donat will present his program on grist mills.

This is an opportunity to learn about and see the inside of a mill without leaving your seat.

The public is invited to attend, without cost or obligation.

Volunteers needed

The Tamaqua Community Arts Center is looking for volunteers to help distribute fliers throughout Tamaqua. The only requirements are to be able to walk or drive through to deliver printed fliers to local businesses.

Health fair

The Tamaqua-Panther Valley SU310 Girl Scouts will be holding a Health Fair for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade on Saturday.
