Polk PTO meeting

Polk Elementary School's monthly PTO meeting will be on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. in the library. Parents of Polk students are welcome to attend.

Veterans memorial service

A memorial service to honor all veterans will be held on Monday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at the Polk Township Veterans Memorial, located between the Kresgeville Post Office and Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church, on Route 209.

Parking is available at the post office or at the church. Please bring a lawn chair.

ESRC volleyball

The Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission will sponsor a Summer Volleyball League for adults 18 and older. Registrations are now being accepted.

Contests will be held at the sand volleyball court at the Black Diamond Park, Coaldale.

The league is co-ed and teams may have between six and 10 players. Games are scheduled to begin June 14 and will then be held Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer months.

Running of the Dawgs

The Northern Lehigh Education Foundation will sponsor the Running of the Dawgs 5K Run/Fitness Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run on Saturday, June 2, at the Northern Lehigh Athletic Stadium, 1 Bulldog Lane, Slatington.

The events schedule is as follows: 7:30 a.m. registration; 8:30 a.m. 1-Mile Fun Run; 9 a.m. 5K Run/Walk; post-race, awards, drawing, dog costume judging.

Community meal

A free community supper will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 345 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton. All are welcome to enjoy a free meal and fellowship.

Help wanted

Can you spare one hour a week for a worthy cause? The Meals on Wheels program in Palmerton is always in need of more drivers.

Panther Valley Golden Agers

The Annual Memorial Mass of the Panther Valley Golden Agers was held on May 14 at St. Joseph's Church, Summit Hill. The celebrants were the Rev. James Burdess and the Rev. Kenneth Medve. Eleven members from the past year were remembered with a candle being lit for each deceased member.

A meeting was held after Mass with 50 members attending. A "Letter To My Mother" was read by Betty Orsulak and a hoagie lunch was enjoyed by all present.

Athletic awards

Pleasant Valley High School will hold its athletic awards program at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23. One must have a ticket to attend.

Free bread

Every Tuesday, from 2-4 p.m., free bread will be available at the Sun Valley Fire Company in Effort. One should just show up. The Faith Mountain Church in Brodheadsville is sponsoring the event.

The church holds a worship service from 9 -10 a.m. For more information call Mrs. Manuel Young at (610) 844-3620.

Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met May 9 at the home of Sue Hummel.

Plans for the final fundraiser of the year were discussed and finalized. A used clothing drive will be held June 2 at the American Hose Fire Company. Items, such as clothing and shoes, may be dropped off between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon that day. The installation of officers for 2012-2013 will be held on June 6.

Bible study

The next gathering of the Women's Ecumenical Bible Study will be held on Wednesday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue. It will be held in the Good Shepherd room of the church.

Dean's list

Laura McGavin, daughter of Len and Joann McGavin of town, has been placed on the dean's list at the University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Ky.

Laura is majoring in psychology and when she returns for the fall semester, she will be a senior. She is a graduate of Carbon County Technical Institute.

JROTC Awards Night

The Panther Valley JROTC will hold its awards night on Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Summit Hill

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are being sought to help with a new summer food service program that will begin in June in Summit Hill.

The program will provide free lunch to all school-aged children in the Panther Valley School District.

The lunches will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning June 6 and continuing through Aug. 24, at the Summit Hill Heritage Center, 1 W. Hazard St.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Vol. Fire Co. They will be celebrating Memorial Day. Bring a bag lunch. Dessert will be served. They will have a Chinese auction.
