Recently, there has been an upsurge in the number of mass murders committed by lone gunmen. Americans are a peace loving people who strive to work hard, raise their families and support their communities. The recent mass shooting in a Colorado movie theater was particularly upsetting as it is difficult to avoid a shooter in a crowded theater. This was quickly followed by another killing spree in a Sikh Temple. There are plenty of nut jobs running around with guns intent on making a name for themselves by killing more people than the last executioner did.

Today we are constantly told or taught that a treaty is superior to the Constitution for the United States of America, and that a treaty can therefore amend the Constitution and/or destroy our sovereignty.

These statements are, and always have been, false!

The founding fathers, who wrote the federal Constitution and the "Bill of Rights", which became the "supreme law of the land" on June 21, 1788 and December 15, 1791, respectively, were very intelligent, learned, experienced, patriotic men.

Some states squander all they can collect from their taxpayers and more as they reward their contributors with fat contracts and government handouts. In Pennsylvania, past budget deficits have resulted in a state debt of approximately $45 billion. The unfunded pension liability for state workers is very difficult to quantify.

When I watch the business news on television, I am constantly inundated with commercials imploring me to buy gold. They claim the economy is going to collapse and only precious metals will protect our life savings. The commercials are very effective. People truly are worried about the economy and how to preserve their savings. This week, several friends phoned or emailed me about the best way to buy and store gold. I am not a financial advisor and do not have a crystal ball. All I know is that gold went from a low of $380 per ounce in 2004 to a recent high of over $1,750 per ounce.

President Obama made the biggest guffaw of his reign last week when he attacked entrepreneurs who built their own businesses from the ground up. He stated that they did not do it on their own, the government made it possible. The implication is that without government intervention no one can succeed in America. This President doesn't know what he is talking about! He has no idea of what it is like to start a business, hire employees, and build it into a successful enterprise.

The Obama Administration continued its assault on productive Americans by again raising taxes. The Administration has divided our country into two classes: those who receive government handouts and those who fund those handouts. By failing to renew the Bush tax cuts on single people making more than $200,000 and families with more than $250,000 in income, the President is declaring class warfare on our most productive people. If higher income families reduce their spending then the economy will not expand and there will be no job growth.

In the last few weeks there have been many incidents that should have outraged us as Americans. I was infuriated by such items as the Border Patrol being told to "run and hide" to the President lying about the Affordable Care Act. These are items that should upset our citizens. A few years ago, the Tea Party movement was founded when conservatives were concerned about tax increases. Today there is nary a whimper when the government stomps on our individual freedoms and our rights. Could it be that the government has done so many outrageous things that "We The People" are burned out?

For some Americans, the real meaning of Independence Day has been lost amid the barbecues, hot dogs, hamburgers and funnel cakes.

They will go to fireworks celebrations in their communities. There may be bands playing patriotic music and everyone will sing the national anthem as they have done all of their lives.

When the President does not get his way with Congress, he uses executive orders to implement his policies.

To some this will seem a viable alternative to legislation. To others, including myself, it can be deemed a misuse of presidential powers.

Several months ago the Dream Act failed to pass Congress. This legislation was intended to offer amnesty to illegal aliens who snuck into this country, defied our laws, worked illegally or went on welfare. Many of them also abused hospital emergency rooms because they did not have medical insurance.

Our government continues to seek new ways to infringe on our constitutional freedoms.

In a recent article, I mentioned that the NSA is monitoring our Internet activities, e-mails, and electronic communications. They are building a massive data center in Bluffdale, Utah to expand their capacity to violate our constitutional rights. This will be the largest data center in the world and has the ability to track and analyze all of our personal and business electronic correspondence and Internet activity.
