Education & Family

Saturday, December 7, 2013

My mother - Virginia Mandracia Wells - lived her life on two Broadways - one in Manhattan, NYC, and one in Jim Thorpe, PA (AKA Mauch Chunk, PA).

Mom always wanted to be a dancer. When she was a young child, she would make up her own dances and entertain the family. She loved watching movies that showed singing and dancing.

Growing up in the small PA town of Mauch Chunk, Mom didn't have the opportunity to take dance lessons. Her family struggled financially and didn't have any extra money to satisfy the whim of their middle child.

Life can be wonderful and exciting. It can also be boring and dull. But, even boring and dull days can be very comforting.

Some folks laugh at senior citizens who follow a set routine. The young'uns chuckle at the "early bird specials" in restaurants. They chortle at the "early-to-bed, early-to-rise" sleep habits. They poke fun at the shuffleboard games, the low-impact exercises, and the bathroom habits of their elderly relatives.

I just finished reading the last 25 years of my Thanksgiving columns. I was hoping to get some inspiration for the 2013 version.

I found it interesting how often I named the same things - year after year. Perhaps that is a habit too hard to break. Of course, certain things don't change. I am always (and I don't often use that word) thankful for my family, our health, and our friends.

Maybe I can come up with a few new ones this year?.......

I am thankful for…..

"On Top of the World" in Ocala, FL. Our development is clean, safe, friendly, active, and convenient.

What has happened to my memory?

As we age, our memory goes the way of the rest of the body - it disintegrates. Someone will ask a question and - knowing that I know the answer - I will begin to respond.

For some reason, the answer gets stuck between my long-term memory and my vocal cords. It sits there, unable to come out, But, perhaps four hours later, like a bolt out of the blue, the answer will pop into my head.

Aha! I didn't lose my memory - it's just tardy!

Now that we reside in Florida, I doubt if we will ever see a snowflake in person again. Oh, sure, we could drive up North in the winter, but that's just foolish. One of our last winter trips to PA resulted in a nerve-wracking drive through a snowstorm in PA, ice in VA, sleet in NC, and a cold rain in SC and GA.

When we drove into FL and saw the blue skies and warmer weather, we vowed not to make a trip north in months with an "R" in their name.

Our grandson Jordan and his wife Cierra live in California. They are both in the Air Force, stationed together. They have an apartment close to their base and they share their home with two kittens and a puppy.

Their puppy is a German shepherd named Dez and he is a little cutie. We have seen pictures of him online and understand why Jordan and Cierra fell in love with him.

What they didn't know when they adopted Dez is that he suffers from canine megaesophagus a nasty disease that requires a lot of care on the part of the owner.

When I served my Pennsylvania community as the principal of the high school, there were many times when I was asked to give a speech. Once, an organization requested that I speak about the topic "What is Success?" I truly believe that was one of the hardest speeches for me to write. There are as many definitions of 'success' as there are people in this world.

My regular readers know that I have been enamored with constructing pine straw baskets. A course here at On Top of the World taught me the basics and I have made quite a few of the little pieces.

Now I have one basket that has been under construction for about four months. I just can't seem to get it finished. Each time I work on it, I do a few rows and then get frustrated and stop. With that kind of progress, the basket may never get finished.

There is an unwritten rule - Read the book before you see the movie. Some people will disagree with that. They much prefer seeing and hearing the story develop on screen instead of reading the words on a page.

People like me don't want to see the movie before they read the book. They like to get the author's words and descriptions in their head before the screenwriters and directors tell them what to think.

Dear Dr. Smith,

Every evening, our home becomes a battleground. My son gets so much homework that it takes him hours to do it. My husband and I have to be policemen to insure he works at getting it done. School just started this year and I don't know how we will keep this up for nine more months. Please help us. Thank you.
