Education & Family

On our front porch, we have a big, old peace lily plant. Recently, Jim transplanted it into a new, larger pot. The plant seems to love the porch and is thriving. Every time I look at it, I smile, remembering the occasion years ago when it first entered our home in PA.

A writer named Jim Eason once wrote, "If you want to look young and thin, hang around with old, fat people."

I laughed when I read that line, but I also had an epiphany. We human beings have a bad habit of skewing our perceptions to fit our own needs.

When I go in the pool here in our 55-and-older community, I don't feel out of place with my one-piece bathing suit, gray hair, and plump figure. But, if I go to the ocean and walk the beach looking for shells, in my perception, I suffer in comparison to other beach walkers.

I used the word "festering" in a conversation. I told my friend that my emotions were high and that I was "festering" while waiting to make a decision. My friend said, "What? I thought that festering meant having pus in a sore." Well, that's true, but another meaning of the word is "to grow embittered or rankled."

One of my favorite quotations is: "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why they call it the present."

When you learn to live each day as if it is a gift, the world takes on a different meaning. There is no room for regrets, no time for arguments, no place for envy or hatred and no energy wasted on trivial matters.

Yes, it is hot in our new home state of Florida. We knew that for years. We have visited our daughter here for more than 20 years, so we were well aware of the type of blistering heat the Sunshine State produces.

I don't mind the heat. We have air conditioning and ceiling fans and a nice front porch that is sheltered by towering oaks. Our cars are cool, the stores can sometimes be frigid, and all the restaurants are comfortable. Even our golf cart gives us a nice breeze as we putt-putt our way around the development.

The newscasters on TV have lately been accusing certain Americans of being 'wusses' and 'wimps.' This name-calling attitude started when a high school ordered its students to stop wearing tee-shirts or sweatshirts with the name of the college they plan to attend.

Apparently, seniors who found out that they were accepted at Harvard or Yale or another well-respected school were going online and purchasing shirts from their 'soon-to-be' place of education and wearing those shirts to class.

When Hollywood decided that Julia Roberts would make a good Wicked Queen in a modern re-make of "Snow White," I had to giggle. Surely, they must be kidding. But, while watching the preview ads, I noticed that Julia seemed to be relishing the role.

One of my favorite movies from the 1950s starred Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly "High Society." In one scene, they were lounging on a sailboat and Bing sings a song to Grace. The song was "True Love," and it has been one of my favorites since I first heard it.

No, it's not December 31st. New Year's Day is more than half a year away. But, for a great number of folks, this is THE END of a year - a school year. Most people who attend or work in schools feel as though they should be celebrating with champagne and noisemakers. It's finally over!

A few years back, I read a book by Dr. Kevin Lehman. The title intrigued me "The Birth Order Book." I wanted to know more about how people's personalities can be controlled by their place in the order of the family. A lot of what I read made sense. After all, I am the eldest of three children, I am married to a "youngest" and I gave birth to an "only." Many of the traits described by Dr. Lehman fit my entire family scenario.
