Back Again

Saturday, November 3, 2012

With the presidential election day only three days away, today it is fitting that we hear a few words from our president. No, not the current president residing in the White House, and not from the guy who would like to unseat him.

Today we'll hear from the late, great Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, who was once voted the Greatest American.

Trick or Treating was an exact science for us when we were kids. On the day before Halloween we visited all the homes in town. Then, on Halloween night, we frequented all the bars, more than two dozen of them in Coaldale where I grew up.

Today, a few thoughts and tidbits to liven up your Saturday morning.

I'm betting the guy "Fearless Felix" who fell 128,000 feet (more than 24 miles) to set the world's skydiving record, will keep his title for a long time. Most of us wouldn't be crazy enough to try to break that record.

The military salute is a motion that evolved from medieval times, when knights in armor raised their visors to reveal their identity.

Today some thoughts, along with some observations about today's economy, sent to me by a loyal reader.

Tamaqua lost one of its good people last weekend, when Howie Miller, 74 lost his courageous battle with cancer and passed away in St. Lukes Hospital, Fountain Hill.

I'll miss his many emails, our conversations and his conservative leanings which he was always willing to share with anyone who cared to listen.

A few thoughts and facts today to go with your Saturday morning cup of coffee.

Tell me this is a bad joke. Reports out of Hollywood say that Jane Fonda has been selected to play Nancy Reagan in an upcoming movie. Hanoi Jane, the same despicable actress who visited the North Vietnamese troops and mocked our own military during the Vietnam War? She has been selected for a role depicting one of the most elegant and dignified women in American history? I'll believe it when I see it.

Airports at higher altitudes require a longer airstrip due to lower air density.

@$:Facts you run across whenever you have a lot of spare time to spend while you're on vacation.

Did you know.....

If you are right handed, you will tend to chew your food on the right side of your mouth. If you are left handed, you will tend to chew your food on the left side of your mouth. If you're underhanded you probably chew on both sides of your mouth.

To make half a kilo of honey, bees must collect nectar from over two million individual flowers. No wonder the stuff is so expensive.

Layne "The Doctor" Roberts of Penn's Peak Radio is my favorite disc jockey, especially when he sends along material to help fill this Saturday column.

Recently he emailed me a list of words you probably don't hear spoken anymore.

See what you think.

Be sure to fill the ice trays, we're going to have company.

Quit slamming the screen door when you go out.

Be sure and pull the windows down when you leave, it looks like a shower is coming up.

Don't forget to wind the clock before you go to bed.

A TIMES NEWS editorial this week described our national debt as "something we can't comprehend."

Considering the debt is $16 trillion and climbing, who would comprehend it? Certainly not anyone in Washington.

To put things in perspective, Faye Ruckhardt of Nesquehoning, sent along these facts and figures which might give you some idea just how deep in debt we are.

Here's what she wrote:

Becoming a senior citizen is no easy task. And although many are called and many are chosen, it's still quite an accomplishment making it to our later years.

Many seniors are proud of their accomplishments, and like to brag about their triumphs.

One way to celebrate those senior years is with bumper stickers.

Here's some you may or may not see in your travels.

But they do exist.

One senior motorist yearned for those earlier days by displaying this banner: There's no question as to his political leanings.

With President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden barnstorming all over the country on the campaign trail, don't you wonder who's running the country while they're out trying to get re-elected? If you're out campaigning 100 percent of the time, it's pretty difficult to take care of business.
