Back Again

Saturday, January 5, 2013

Here we are, five days into the new year, and I'm betting 90 percent of the New Year's resolutions have been broken already. That's why I don't make any.

And now, to today's column. There are many customs and phrases that we use in everyday living that are a part of our routine. But did you ever wonder where they originated. One loyal reader provided this list, and it makes for interesting reading. Hope it enlightens you on this first weekend of the new year.

WHY:

Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

@$:It's the last weekend of the year 2012. I have nothing better to do, so I'll pass on these thoughts sent to me by a loyal reader.

Happy New Year everyone, and take it easy on the Boilo.

1.. If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.

2.. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat.

3.. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years.

4.. A tortoise doesn't run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.

And you tell me to exercise??

(Editor's Note: Bob Urban, author of the weekly Back Again column, is home baking a Christmas fruit cake. Substituting for him this week is Bruce Frassinelli, a 1957 graduate of Summit Hill School, who lives in Schnecksville and is an adjunct instructor at Lehigh Carbon Community College.)

I am hoping to survive another Christmas without being confronted with questions about the existence of Santa Claus.

My monthly Social Security check will be arriving next week. I'm going to pay special attention to it this month. Here's why, according to George Sirois, a reader who passed on the following information.

He writes:

Pay attention to your next Social Security income, whether you get a check or an electronic deposit.

Have you noticed, your Social Security check is now referred to as a "Federal Benefit Payment"?

I am forwarding it because it touches a nerve in me, and I hope it will in you.

If it weren't for drunk driving, drug possession, and domestic violence crimes, The TIMES NEWS would have trouble filling up it's Police Log column each day. But unfortunately that's not the case.

One day last week I counted 13 DUI arrests in a single day. That statistic is enough to drive you to drink.

Some thoughts as we head into December and the Christmas holiday season.

Remember when Black Friday was just that, the Friday after Thanksgiving?

If they keep moving in farther and farther ahead, the Christmas shopping season will so be starting the morning after Labor Day.

If I had a vote, which I don't, my choice for this year's Heisman Trophy, presented to the top college player every year, would be Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, the brilliant linebacker.

Nearly seven decades ago, in 1943, a former English teacher in the Stroudsburg School District died, but a curious provision in his will has assured that his legacy will live on.

Today some thoughts tossed in with some clever bumper stickers sent to me by loyal reader, Woody Frey.

Are you looking forward to December and all the Christmas festivities? Here's another reason to look forward to month number 12.

This December won't be your ordinary, everyday first month of winter December. Why?

December, 2012 will have five Saturdays, five Sundays, and five Mondays (check your calendar). The Chinese call it the Money Bag, and apparently something like this only happens once every 824 years.

"A life without a dog is a mistake. Those are the words of German writer and playwright Carl Zuckmayer.

There are times I would argue that statement, like whenever my "Raygan" doesn't want to go outside because it's too cold or its raining. Or, at midnight when she decides she does want to go out and I'm in the midst of a deep sleep. There are times she'll pull on the covers and get me up just so I'll go and get her a dog treat in the middle of the night.
