The Frugal Foodie

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

The new year is a great time to brush off your money-saving skills and start the year with a fresh attitude.

While I pride myself in being frugal, the holidays are a tough time for us. We eat too much, spend too much, and buy odd things at the grocery store because I'm in such a hurry.

With Christmas just two weeks away, I'm busy preparing for the holidays and planning my final gifts.

While I can't tell you what I'm buying people, I will tell you that a majority of our gifts for friends and the extended family are edible. I love cooking, and my friends and family love eating. (OK, I love eating too.)

I also enjoy knowing that edible gifts are inexpensive to make, which means that I can spread more holiday cheer on a small budget. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

With just one week left until Thanksgiving, it's time to create a shopping and savings plan. If you'll be cooking a big meal this year, you're probably dreading next week already all of that cooking, prep work, and the cost of feeding a larger crowd.

Fortunately, being in charge of Thanksgiving doesn't have to be a big headache or a huge expense. Start planning now.

It's fall, and you know what that means cold and flu season.

I felt my first cold of the season coming on a few days ago, so I did what any reasonable person would do I took a chicken out of the freezer, roasted it for dinner, and made chicken soup with the leftovers.

It's been a rough week. Between work and "play" (we're remodeling our bathroom), there hasn't been much time to shop for groceries, let alone cook.

To prevent a last-minute scramble for dinner or ordering takeout every night, I knew we would need a plan this week to keep us well-fed with fast, simple meals.

It didn't take long to come up with this list of simple meals, jot down a grocery list, and feel ready to face our first hectic week of remodeling.

It's getting chilly outside at night, and the days are getting shorter. Fall is here. It's time to make soup!

I may be rushing the seasons, but I love homemade soup. It fills our house with wonderful smells. It's warm and filling, and I can work on other things while the soup simmers away. I can also prepare most soups with leftover ingredients that I already have in the house making it a true frugal food, too.

When my husband asked for ham last week, I was very excited. We've had a large ham in our freezer for months now and I couldn't wait to get that freezer space back.

When I pulled the ham out of the freezer to thaw, I checked the sell-by date. Much to my surprise, the ham's sell-by date was May 2009. I guess this ham has been in our freezer longer than I thought.

As the days and nights become cooler, we've begun preparing our garden for fall. The summer crops are in, our late-summer crops are plentiful, and we've begun planning for next year's planting.

I've always considered gardening a great hobby. It's fairly frugal I rarely spend more than $25 for a year's worth of seeds and plants. How else can you stretch $25 into an entire summer of entertainment? I find nothing more rewarding than digging in the dirt, weeding, and harvesting the food that we've grown.

You probably have the day off on Monday, which is Labor Day. But do you know why our nation has an annual celebration on the first Monday in September?

Labor Day was created more than 100 years ago to celebrate the economic success of American workers. While it's hard to see any "economic success" during a recession, Labor Day is a time to pay tribute to all of the hard-working Americans who toil to support their families and themselves.

Would you like to cut your grocery bill by 15 percent? Stop wasting food.

It sounds simple don't throw away food that you've bought with hard-earned dollars.
